New Ducky Shine 2 TKL Problem
« on: Tue, 25 December 2012, 09:04:12 »
Hey guys,

after recently purchasing a brand new Filco keyboard and being forced due to return it due some of the keys being fairly coarse and squeaky I was refunded of the money I spent on the keyboard and decided to get another one as the Filco was great even with its flaws. I decided on a Ducky, and received it the day before Christmas to my surprise. After using it for a while I have come to discover the control key on the left side, seems to feel a lot more gritty and seems a lot harder to press down (using pinky finger to press it down in games, may be caused by me hitting in on an angle) with fingers on the wasd formation. The keyboard came with Cherry MX Browns, and was wondering if this is sometimes a problem on other boards of similar quality, or on this switch type specifically. If this is a problem should I just return and get a board in mx reds, which may not have the grittiness of the current board? Kind of been plagued lately with the purchase of everything electronic, having to return a lot of things which is fairly annoying.

Anyway a few responses would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Nah. That isnt the problem due to control key on the left side being too small for the need of stabilizers. Starting to think maybe the switch needs to be lubed?

I got a ducky shine 2 of my own a few days ago. I can't say that I have a problem with the left control, but in general I find the switches to be stiffer than other browns I've used. Lubing the switch may be a bit awkward since it's plate mounted, unless you're used to doing that kind of thing.

One problem that I do have with the board is that the G and H keys seem to be too close too each other, as in they aren't equidistant as they should be. My keycaps on the G and H sometimes rub against each other and there's a visible space between H and J. Do you see the same on yours by any chance?

Daily driver: Filco Tenkeyless MX Brown with ergonomically weighted, lubed springs.

On one of my Ducky Shines, both with blues, some of the keys do not click.  They activate fine, they just don't click (sometimes).

From this I assume it is just a slight variation in switches - buying thousands of switches for hundreds of keyboards there are bound to be a few switches that are not 100%.

As long as the switch registers, at least you can continue to use the keyboard.

Lubing or anything else might void the warranty, so consider carefully before going down that route.  No stabilisers either, pressing my Ctrl keys from the middle and either side they work fine.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There really isn't to much distance variation between the keys around the control. Not enough to rub anyway. I'll just keep using it and see how it plays out. If it gets any worse I can always send it back.

Have a friend that has a Ducky Shine II with MX Blues with the exact same issues as you and my Ducky Green's numpad no.6 has that issue. Did you contact RMA services or anything?

I may be able to return it as a change of mind because I've only had it for a few days. Will then get mx reds in the same board.

Edit: Am not going to be able I return as I opened the packaging and have used the keyboard. Am going to have to get in touch with Ducky and see if I can get a replacement or send it back to pccasegear and have them test it for problems (I highly doubt they will do anything over a single key).
