Want to get a Realforce, but where?
« on: Fri, 16 April 2010, 23:15:33 »
Greetings, just registered today.

Had been using a mechanical keyboard for several years without knowing that it was one (Model M), and eventually moved over to a membrane keyboard as the first one broke down. (This was quite a while ago, and I'm pretty certain that one of the visitors also spilled some Fanta over the keyboard) Currently I'm using Microsoft's Office keyboard which is long gone from their own website and not supported in any means; even no drivers, they brought the thing down completely from the latest IntelliPoint softwares. And after using it for 8 years, the key surface is almost glossy from wearing out - and the typing, well, doesn't feel good either.

It was last year when I got a chance to visit my friend's place and noticed the keyboards he had: HHKB2 and Filco Majestouch Otaku. At first I didn't really understand why he would use two keyboards, but after trying them, I was almost ready to toss out my old keyboard. Had a chance to try a few more models out later on - namely Cherry brown axis and such - and HHKB2 felt the best amongst them. However I couldn't get used to the layout at all. It was then I noticed the tenkeyless version of Realforce that uses the same mechanism.

Well, I'll cut the rant: Only problem is, I can't find a place that sells one. I'm living in Ontario, Canada and haven't seen a place that sells mechanical keyboards. There's always EliteKeyboards, but with the shipping the price goes up to a whopping $299 USD.

Any suggestions?

Elite or post a wanted ad here on geekhack, those are your best options in North America.  Fentek is in Arizona, USA and was going to be carrying some Realforce boards so you could check with them.
IBM F :: IBM M :: Northgate :: Cherry G80 :: Realforce :: DAS 4

Can't get to the marketplace yet (most likely due to my low member level at the forums) so I guess my bet would be EliteKeyboards. Ah well, at least the US dollar and Canadian dollar is almost on par right now.

Before I make my final purchase - should I go for the ergonomically weighted version, or the 55g unified version? Personally I'd go for all 45g if such option was possible, but there isn't for the Realforce.

Well, if you liked the HHKB2 then I would go for the weighted version - the standard one.    The 55g was originally just for the Korean market.  Dunno why the Koreans preferred heavier keyboards, may have been just a handful of corporate customers.

So you prefer the standard model??   I just bought one today from a fellow Geekhacker  The variable weight model I think??  Not totally sure yet.   It was mentioned to me by 2 Geekhackers that the 55g model is easier to get used to.

Well, my reasoning is simple.   The variable weighted Realforce is the lightest keyboard on the market next to the Datahand.

For relaxing times, make it Topre Time.

Okay.......turns out I'm getting the variable weighted model.

Same here, placing an order via EliteKeyboards right now.
Thanks for the replies.

I just picked up a 55g model and I am really enjoying it. I wish the number pad was the same.
