Cherry MX Clears
« on: Thu, 31 January 2013, 18:55:02 »
Hi all, I'm looking into options for my next keyboard. I like the blues on my Filco, but want to try something different. Thinking about browns or clears, but I don't know of any boards beside a couple Deck ones that come stock with clears, and they're quite expensive. I would like to keep the price under $100 if possible. As far as clears are concerned, would I be best off getting a Quickfire Rapid or something similar with blues, buying a bunch of clear switches, and switching out the stems to make ergo clears? How loud are ergo clears?

Clears are as "silent" as browns/blues/blacks/reds, ie they only have the bottom out and the top out noise.
But to change stems without desoldering, get a keyboard without a metal plate, such as a Poker, or one of the custom keyboards around here like the Phantom or the ErgoDox with the special plates that allow removal of the switch top housings without desoldering.
A QFR and most keyboards for that matter will need desoldering of switches.
Kinesis Contoured Advantage & Advantage2 LF with Cherry MX Red switches / Extra keys mod / O-ring dampening mod / Dvorak layout. ErgoDox with buzzer and LED mod.
Also: Kinesis Advantage Classic, Kinesis Advantage2, Data911 TG3, Fingerworks Touchstream LP, IBM SSK (Buckling spring), Goldtouch GTU-0077 keyboard

Great response from sordna. Pretty much sums it up.

I will also add that unfortunately this will almost certainly end up costing you over $100, whichever way you go about it. Pokers are running at around $100 on their own these days, and a bunch of Clear switches might cost you $50-$80 depending on how many you want and where you source them. If you are willing to desolder/solder, the CM QFR is obviously much cheaper.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

Cherry G80-3000LQCEU or equivalent; or just any other PCB-mounted keyboard, and separate switches

When are the Ducky SII MX Clears supposed to be showing up?
Supposedly by the end of the month, but I'd put it at within the next couple weeks. Orange LEDs are also coming in.

:D

Awesome. Sounds like this may be the simplest route.

Try them on a G80-8113. They sometimes go fairly cheap.
i have seen unix admins with john deere trucker hats, and even seen a man in a nascar shirt correct a passerby's klingon.
