Cherry MX White
« on: Sun, 24 March 2013, 20:16:14 »
Does anyone have a keyboard with Cherry MX Whites? If so could you post a video of the sound of the switches, I've been trying to find one for the longest time... I hear they feel like blues as well, is this true?

I would be interested as well.   From the descriptions I've read they sound like the closest you can get to an office friendly Buckling Spring.

The problem with that video is that I cant even turn my volume up loud enough to make it match my MX blue switch... which is why I started the thread C:

White is much more quiet I would say like maybe 40%, but it does not have as sharp snap feeling either.

How did you know? But yes, I am a very heavy handed typists, which was why I was looking at whites. Having said that, however, I like browns they feel much more tactile to me, blues just feel like a linear switch that has an added annoying click.

I honestly feel the exact opposite, browns feel like a pile of mud, the tactile is just annoying because its so close to linear. I think if you want something that is very tactile, I would go with the model M, the bump is VERY precise, and the keypress is very heavy. I'd be willing to sell mine, if you were interested!

Actually, it's not a bump - but a buckling of the spring :P

The highest tactile 'bump' you can get from Cherry switches, would be the MX clear. The lighter the spring, the more pronounced the 'bump' will feel.

Yeah, but the buckling of that spring, you can just feel it through your entire hand, it just feels so awesome, I don't even have to bottom out of my Model M, Unfortunately I get tired after typing on it for a while because I'm a wimp lool.

hahah yeah I was thinking of selling it for cheap, since geekhackers know the prices. Maybe I'd do something like 50-60, it has detatchable cable, but this isnt my selling thread, you can check it out in the classifides and we can talk about it there.

MX whites is similar to blues but the click is not has defined and sharp. It's a tad less tactile and click is softer, but definitely there. I'm making this comparison based on both using the same mx blue springs. The stock mx white springs are just way too stiff and I don't imaging anyone actually pounding their keys when they type on mx whites.

When comparing them to ergo-clears with the same mx blue/brown/red springs, they're both tactile but in a different way. The tactile bump from ergo-clear is also definitely noticeable, but it's not as crisp as the soft clicking tactile bump from mx whites. The tactile bump of ergo-clears happens at a very small range throughout the keypress, while the tactile click from the mx whites happens only at one exact point once you've reached it. That's the best I can describe it, but I feel this is something you really have to try out yourself to know. Light MX whites are actually one of my favorites.

I have a Ducky Shine II with whites in the mail.  I'll update when I've used it a bit ;)

I'm also curious how the Clears compare with Whites: is the tactile bump more noticeable, harder to overcome and more satisfying as I imagine it to be?  A shipment of Duckys with Clears came in right after mine with Whites shipped, and I'm having cold feet.  :-X

Where did you buy your Ducky with MX whites? My guess is that you won't want to type on it for long. Stock MX whites are just way too stiff to put up with for a long time. It's extremely tedious to swap out the springs too because not only do you have have desolder all the switches and open them up, you'll have to desoler all the LEDs as well.

I got it on mechanicalkeyboards.com.  I'm optimistic about the stiffness since I'm on a 75g keyboard right now and have no problem with it, so I figured 80g would be OK too.  I'd definitely send it back if it was bad, though.

I thought the stiffness was the same as MX Greens, which many people type on?  I'm very curious about all these switches, since I found the common switches to be a bit weak and plastic-y.  The Alps in my AEKII are much more substantial, but the actuation point is very high so the force curve is actually somewhat like a membrane keyboard.  It's a much nicer feel, of course, but I like the way blues work, and was hoping whites would get me the stiffness and quietness of the cream Alps, plus the tactile "break"  of blues.  But I was also interested in clears.

Jamdox, if you got a Ducky DK9008 Shine II with White LEDs and "white switches" from MechanicalKeyboards.com, I'd double check the switches when you get the board. Yesterday, MK.com posted on Facebook that they mislabeled one of the Ducky boards as having white switches, the board really had White LEDs with Clear switches. They changed their description on their website too.

Aaaaaaaaaaah.  That explains why the white switches suddenly went out of stock and the clears came in.  Well, guess I'm getting a better-Deck!  We'll see.  ;D

My concern with clears is that they'll feel plastic-y and rough.  But maybe I can lube them?

And this confusion was caused because in TW and China, Whites ==> Clears. and Milks ==> Whites
