Need a mainstream backup keyboard - compariable to a Model M
« on: Sun, 03 March 2013, 01:58:37 »
Hi,
Considering my Model M seems to have failed. I need a backup keyboard.
Sorry but Unicomp is out of the equation (too far away, no local distributor/reseller) and therefore buckling spring action KB's.
So from a list from these guys (Who are only 20mins away from me.)
Can people please offer some suggestions?
I'm not expecting a Model M  :(. But something pretty damn close would be great. Thanks!
:)

Was going to suggest the QFR because it's cheap... but since they don't have it, get the Leopold FC700R with MX Blues, and the PBT caps are a bonus. ;D Personally I'd go for the grey one (sexiest one IMHO, but I have it so I'm biased) but they don't have it in stock with the Blues..

Would have suggested something with Greens to more replicate the heavier buckling switch but they don't have any.

Or, can't you try eBay for another Model M?

Cool!
I'm just learning about the CherryMX color coded switch types. It seems Blue is quite popular.
I need a keypad though, and I'm not so sure about white :)

Re: Model M's, I'm not going to bother searching for another Model M - Seems they're becoming rarer and the ones I have seen are in rather bad shape.

OK I've narrowed it down.
I require a numpad and I think cherry blue is the switch for me.
CoolerMaster Storm Trigger (Cherry Blue)
Das Keyboard Professional Model S for Mac (Cherry Blue) (Anything without a windows logo ;) )
Ducky DK9008 Shine II Mech Keyboard Blue LED (Cherry Blue)
Leopold FC500R Mechanical Keyboard (Cherry Blue)
So far the Das is looking good and the Storm trigger is looking not bad.
Opinions?
:)

I bought the DAS. The piano finish will match my Swan H5's :)

I felt the same way about blues.  They feel cheesy and cheap compared to an M and are more irritating.  I actually prefer MX browns over blues, though "ergo-clears" probably have the closest feel to a Model M in my opinion.

Model  M's have been coming down in price.  There have been some non-1391401 going for under $50 shipped.
