Need some last minute help... Ordering today
« on: Mon, 18 March 2013, 04:43:54 »
First a little background.  For the last (far to many) years I've been using regular Razer gaming keyboards and after having used this same one for what seems like 3 years I decided to buy a new keyboard.  I had heard quite a bit about mechanical so I set out on a knowledge journey.

I found

That picture made me 100% want to buy a mechanical keyboard so I could fully customize the board to fit my taste, and not only that, but I loved the rainbow keycap set.

So I decided, I'm buying a new keyboard and will get a rainbow set of keys and maybe just a regular purple set of keys just in case I get tired of the rainbow.

The problem is, I can't decide on which keyboard to get.

I really like the white choc mini, but it seems that the key are a little harder to get because the spacebar is a different size than normal (maybe I was misinformed?).  I actually found a white choc mini with a complete rainbow set on ebay but it had black switches which was kind of disappointing.

The other one that I am trying to decide about is this:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=185

My primary use of the keyboard will be playing Starcraft.

The things I like about the choc mini:
  • White case
  • Closeness of the f keys to the numberkeys

The things I like about the ducky keyboard:
  • Even though I preferred white, this black case looks sweet
  • Size seems 100% pefect
  • Key caps seem pretty universal, so finding a rainbow set shouldn't be hard

What do you guys think? I need to order today in order to get it while I'm on spring break at my house.

First of all, welcome to GH!

It's comes down to personal preference too much for anyone to give you a definite answer. But what I can tell you a few relevant things for your situation so you can decide yourself: Noppoo has an non-replaceable spacebar due to the size. So if you put a lot of emphasis on the aesthetics of it and the spacebar shines, then you'll just have to live with it. It's also hard to replace the whole keycap set because of the non-standard key sizes. You're pretty much stuck with stock caps if you want a whole matching set. The good thing about the form factor is that it's good for sc2. If you toggle between map locations a lot, and you have short fingers, those close function row keys will make it easier to jump around map locations.

The TKL is much more popular, and will have a higher resale value. The layout is modern ANSI, so almost any keycap set will fit. lol I think I just repeated everything you already know.

Thanks for welcoming me xD.

I think I've pretty much decided on the Ducky keyboard.  Customizing the key set is honestly one of the biggest parts of this to me.  I want a unique keyboard that will last me for a long time that I can take to lans and such.  Probably ordering it in a few hours unless someone here adds something that completely changes my mind.
