[WTB] i5 3570K or i7 3770K
« on: Wed, 20 February 2013, 22:46:15 »
Not sure if any of the people still here remember me, but I'm back in search of an i5 3570K or an i7 3770K either new or slightly used (and by slightly used, I mean only run at stock settings and, preferably, less than a month at most).

I'm not really looking to spend a whole lot and would be willing to buy a CPU+Mobo combo if the deal is right. I can also offer my i5 750 OC'd to 3.8GHz from 2.66GHz (stable) and EVGA P55 Mobo plus some cash as a trade for those looking to a downgrade to a low-power output build or whatever the case is.

Feel free to post on here or PM me with offers!

Microcenter has the best prices to buy it new.  Where are you located?

+1 Microcenter, that's where I bought mine (did a mobo/processor combo and even after tax it was at least $80 cheaper than anywhere else).  Their current price for new is $229, but yeah, in store only.  If you don't live near a MC, maybe someone who does could proxy one to you.

I'm in FL...no Microcenter here or I would've already gotten it :(

Debating whether or not to wait for the 4770K as well.

That's very nice if you. Maybe funxion will only want the chip to save on shipping costs.

just wondering, what are you going to be doing with this comp?
do you need the i7 and its hyperthreading?
or will a normal i5 quad core be enough?

cause microcenter has $50.00 off motherboard bundles for the i5 3570k which they sell for $199.99, and if you add say the ASRock extreme 6 that'll be 79.99 = 279.98 before tax compared to the i7 3770k being 229.99 + normal price for the ASRock 129.99 = 359.98 before tax

I have an i5 750 OC'd to 3.8GHz from 2.66GHz sitting on an EVGA P55 right now. I know it's on the lower end of this gen's quad cores, but it's just not enough for what I do.

I primarily play video games, but with games like PlanetSide 2 where your GPU is a non-factor, I really need to just gear up a little more (especially with Dirty Bomb on the way). I also would like to start streaming.

So unless the i5 3570K can handle streaming better than the i5 750 by a longshot, I think i7 is the way to go. And sure, it will cost me around $350 (maybe a little more) to make this transition, but I plan on selling my CPU, Mobo, and CPU Cooler (unless the Zalman CNPS10X is compatible with and sufficient for the i7, which I doubt) to recover some of the cost.

There is absolutely no reason to get a 3770K over a 3570K for your needs. I've even read that HT can cause stuttering in PlanetSide2, due to the game using two physical cores and two logical cores instead of four physical, so you might have to turn it off. You should obviously do what you want, but unless you're doing heavy transcoding, encoding, workstation kind of stuff, there is really no reason to get the 3770K over the 3570K. Also the 3570K is a huuuuuge jump from the more than three year old Lynnfield i5 750, and you're probably not going to notice a single difference between the 3570K and 3770K.

you could invest in a capture card. (around $220)
which would result in almost no additional stress on the cpu while streaming, since it has an onboard chip for encoding.

Hm alright. Guess I could grab a capture card at a later date. More concerned about performance right now. Do you think I should wait for more price drops or is MicroCenter pretty low already on the i5 3570K?

I knew the i7 was $230 at MC, but had no idea the i5 was still $190 ugh. I'd probably go with the i7 for a few reasons. First, it's only $40 more (More resale value, but I tend to part out/upgrade A LOT lol) and second you can get $50 off a CPU/Motherboard combo at Micro Center (Photo below).
Assuming you don't need the stock cooler, and I hope you don't haha, just have iArson ship the mobo and chip and it really shouldn't be that much.

Subtract $50 from motherboard prices in Red and add $189.99/$229.99 (Plus tax/shipping) for final price, assuming you're getting a combo :)
You could theoretically get a 3770K CPU/Mobo combo for $229.99 total (plus tax/shipping), but this would be with a mediocre board.
Edit: And don't forget about the boards on the left. Here's a direct link to the same page - http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/e055b2fc#/e055b2fc/33
Edit2: Turns out (as shown lol) that the bundle deal only applies to 3570K, so if you want the 3770K, I'd buy the motherboard online from elsewhere. Sorry :)

50 dollar motherboard credit doesn't work with the i7, hence my original post :P
your difference is basically $90 bucks between the i7 and the i5.
i miscalculated the i5 being 200 instead of 190.

i also broke down the cost basically for what i consider the midrange budget.  And OP as others said, your i5 is a dual core chip, the new i5 are quad core chips to begin with.  Blame intel for their insistence on dumbing down CPU naming and causing the confusion.

and i can offer the same deal in terms of proxying, but NY tax for me is 8.875%, and shipping costs would probably be USPS Priority Mail cost like $25 bucks if you're going with a MB/CPU bundle + insurance ofcourse for something this higher cost, so you prob end up costing maybe a little cheaper from ordering it directly from newegg when its all said and done lol

**Edit for newegg pricing**
i5 3570k = $229.99
ASRock Extreme6 = $141.99

so yeah = $371.98 compared to microcenter $269.98.
after tax for me is $293.94 + shipping lets say $25 + insurance lets say $10 = 328.94

so save like 43 bucks lol

Yeah...so I just went to TigerDirect's store (they have one near me) and they wouldn't match the $189.99 Microcenter price even though TigerDirect just had a sale for $189.99 from 2/15-2/18...

Kind of pissed me off, but anyhow...I think I'm going to wait it out and see if anyone on here has one for sale (I think I have a potential seller).

Thanks for the input everyone!

Also, does anyone have any really good motherboard suggestions? I'm between at the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 and Extreme6. Need someone to sway me one way or another.

I'm sure you're going to get a bunch of Gigabyte & Asus recommendations, but Asrock (Third biggest consumer motherboard manufacturer) has really come a long way since last generation boards (P67/Z68) and offer a much better value imo. They used to only offer a two year warranty, but they've upped it to three years with Ivy bridge boards. Between those two boards, I'd choose whichever has the amount of PCIe slots that you need, as their is very little difference between them (Same onboard sound, same onboard Ethernet, same 8 + 4 Power Phase, etc.) other than size (Both ATX 12.0" x 8.6" vs. 12.0" x 9.6"). The only exception to this would be if they're priced very close, in which case I'd probably go with the Extreme6.

PS Only use the Intel Sata III ports. Ignore the third party ones :)

Edit: I'm not sure if you have an accounts on places like Hardforum, Overclock.net, Anandtech, Techpowerup, etc., but you might want to check out the F/S section on those sites for used CPU/motherboards.

I have an account on OCN, but I don't think I have enough reputation to buy/sell.

I think I'll go with the 6. It's too close in price not to.

You don't need any rep to PM people who are selling things, though people on [H] may be a little wary if you're PMing them with zero posts lol.

I'd make a heatware account and let them know about it.

You don't need any rep to PM people who are selling things, though people on [H] may be a little wary if you're PMing them with zero posts lol.

I'll try that. I'm talking to someone on here, but I'll keep my options open. If anything, I'll link them to GH even though I don't have that many transactions. eBay is probably better.

TL;DR

OP says 3770k and title says 3570k

May want to fix that for whichever one you want for the lazy people like me who don't want to read the whole thing.

Thanks man! By the way, do you still have your white Filco with black caps? I remember you from about a year ago!

Yup, sure do. It has been sitting in my cupboard for a while now though. Pimped out Poker and stock HHKB are my daily drivers atm.
