I have an i5 750 OC'd to 3.8GHz from 2.66GHz sitting on an EVGA P55 right now. I know it's on the lower end of this gen's quad cores, but it's just not enough for what I do.
I primarily play video games, but with games like PlanetSide 2 where your GPU is a non-factor, I really need to just gear up a little more (especially with Dirty Bomb on the way). I also would like to start streaming.
So unless the i5 3570K can handle streaming better than the i5 750 by a longshot, I think i7 is the way to go. And sure, it will cost me around $350 (maybe a little more) to make this transition, but I plan on selling my CPU, Mobo, and CPU Cooler (unless the Zalman CNPS10X is compatible with and sufficient for the i7, which I doubt) to recover some of the cost.
There is absolutely no reason to get a 3770K over a 3570K for your needs. I've even read that HT can cause stuttering in PlanetSide2, due to the game using two physical cores and two logical cores instead of four physical, so you might have to turn it off. You should obviously do what you want, but unless you're doing heavy transcoding, encoding, workstation kind of stuff, there is really no reason to get the 3770K over the 3570K. Also the 3570K is a huuuuuge jump from the more than three year old Lynnfield i5 750, and you're probably not going to notice a single difference between the 3570K and 3770K.
Hm alright. Guess I could grab a capture card at a later date. More concerned about performance right now. Do you think I should wait for more price drops or is MicroCenter pretty low already on the i5 3570K?
iArson, what's the latest I can get to you by?
I knew the i7 was $230 at MC, but had no idea the i5 was still $190 ugh. I'd probably go with the i7 for a few reasons. First, it's only $40 more (More resale value, but I tend to part out/upgrade A LOT lol) and second you can get $50 off a CPU/Motherboard combo at Micro Center (Photo below).
Assuming you don't need the stock cooler, and I hope you don't haha, just have iArson ship the mobo and chip and it really shouldn't be that much.
Subtract $50 from motherboard prices in Red and add $189.99/$229.99 (Plus tax/shipping) for final price, assuming you're getting a combo
You could theoretically get a 3770K CPU/Mobo combo for $229.99 total (plus tax/shipping), but this would be with a mediocre board.
Edit: And don't forget about the boards on the left. Here's a direct link to the same page - http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/e055b2fc#/e055b2fc/33

50 dollar motherboard credit doesn't work with the i7, hence my original post :P
your difference is basically $90 bucks between the i7 and the i5.
i miscalculated the i5 being 200 instead of 190.
i also broke down the cost basically for what i consider the midrange budget. And OP as others said, your i5 is a dual core chip, the new i5 are quad core chips to begin with. Blame intel for their insistence on dumbing down CPU naming and causing the confusion.
and i can offer the same deal in terms of proxying, but NY tax for me is 8.875%, and shipping costs would probably be USPS Priority Mail cost like $25 bucks if you're going with a MB/CPU bundle + insurance ofcourse for something this higher cost, so you prob end up costing maybe a little cheaper from ordering it directly from newegg when its all said and done lol
**Edit for newegg pricing**
i5 3570k = $229.99
ASRock Extreme6 = $141.99
so yeah = $371.98 compared to microcenter $269.98.
after tax for me is $293.94 + shipping lets say $25 + insurance lets say $10 = 328.94
so save like 43 bucks lol
