Ducky shine V2, a safe buy?
« on: Thu, 28 March 2013, 05:40:25 »
Hi!

I got my QPAD MK-85 two days ago and i dont like it since it feels really plastic, and im having some small problems with the backlight aswell.

I emaild the company i bought the keyboard from and they said that i could retrun it and get a code that i could use on their homepage to buy something else.

So im now thinking of buying a Ducky Shine V2 with MX red switches, but im abit afraid since some peoples had problems with a squeeky spacebar.

I want a Keyboard that works to 99 % since i pays so much for it. So my question is to you, is the squeeky spacebar problem still there? and is Ducky Shine V2 a better keyboard overall then the MK-85? That's what ive heard atleast. I dont want a keyboard that feels plastic i want it to feel really stable and good to use when im playing games/typing

Thanks!

Apparently , the squeaky space bar can be resolved by lubing it. Some people have also mentioned that it goes away over time. One thing in general about mech keyboards is that you should not let squeak and "ping" bother you too much, since it is likely that there will be a bit of both on a lot of boards. Often it does not really matter if you can keep yourself from going OCD. There have been no other consistent issues that I have heard off, so you can buy safely without expecting the keyboard to ship with some defect. Of course, you can never have a 100% guarantee of these things.

When it comes to "feeling cheap and plasticky" different people have different tolerances for it. There are some keyboards that are fairly popular that do have that plastic almost toy-like look to them. The biggest offenders here are some of the gaming brands that make keyboards, but there are also some other brands that share this look and feel. Then there are also some brands that do have a good build quality and do feel sturdy, but if shiny plastic puts you off, you are better off looking elsewhere.

I have not had the pleasure if trying out the Ducky Shine V2, but I do not feel like the V1 has a cheap or plasticky feel to it. Especially if you opt for some nicer keycaps.
EDIT: Obviously nice keycaps might be an issue with the Ducky shine.

My squeaky keys just went away after a few days. I actually quite liked it because it made the keyboard feel brand new and that it needed breaking in.

I think you will be happy with the Ducky Shine 2. It has been the best quality stock keyboard I have used (in my opinion) in both feel and looks.

The Ducky Shine IIs are great products. The keyboard saves your current LED state between boots and has the most versatility of all backlit keyboards. I would recommend it most if you need backlighting. I have a Ducky 78 and the backlighting is awesome.

However, the keycaps leave much to be desired. All current production backlit boards (except for Deck) use laser etched dyed ABS keycaps which will wear and feel slippery to me. Unfortunately there isn't much else offered for backlit keycaps. Deck uses special dyesubbed PBT keycaps, but their keycaps are of uniform profile, feature a terrible legend font, are not sculpted and hideously expensive in MX Blacks (and maybe MX Clears).

I like my Ducky Shine and it's cool.

Weren't there some keycaps that were kind of translucent? They were not intended for backlighting, but they had a cool effect of the lights shining up through the keys. I was thinking about putting something like that on my Quickfire TK.

I still consider Ducky's backlit keycaps to be the best quality backlit ABS sets on the market; the QC with their new caps is just much higher on the overall process than others I've seen so far. Of course Deck's PBT are going to out last them by far, but I still think the legends are quite ugly, lol.

It turns on and off with the computer.  It also saves your two custom profiles and remembers what setting you had it on last when you shut down your PC.
