HHKB on Windows: unidentified device
« on: Tue, 09 April 2013, 06:55:44 »
My first post and it is a question; I promise to follow up with the solution one way or another. I have also asked support at Elite Keyboards.

Brand new HHKB Pro 2; Lenovo T420 running Windows 7 64-bit. Plug in HHKB, it attempts to install device drivers; "Device driver software was not successfully installed" because it is an "inidentified device", "no driver found".

The keyboard works fine in BIOS setup, I'm not sure why Windows insists on installing drivers.

In Device Manager it shows up as "Other Devices", "Unknown device." Under properties I see that the VID is 0409 and the PID is 005A. The VID does not appear in PCI Database dot com. I don't know if this is significant.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

I had no issues at all when initially setting up my HHKB on the Windows 7 operating system I have here at home. I can't remember if Windows needed to download any drivers, but it worked for me almost instantly and with no trouble. Maybe try googling your error if you haven't already? Otherwise if it continues to malfunction, you may want a new one completely; although acquiring a new one could be a huge pain.

To clarify, I'm not sure what the issue is - However, my HHKB worked fine so I would assume something on your end is faulty, whether it is your computer or your HHKB. Sorry for your troubles man! Hope it gets worked out soon.  :'(

Good Luck!

Thanks, behappy. I figured it out.

First, the keyboard worked on my colleague's identical laptop. Then I noticed that the unknown device was class 9 which is a USB hub. Of course the HHKB has a USB hub...

After a lot of guessing, this solution worked:

Phew!
