Getting into this stuff
« on: Mon, 29 April 2013, 12:25:54 »
I got my first mechanical keyboard a while back, it was a Razer Blackwidow. I really didn't like the way it looked, but I got it for really cheap at the time so it ended up being my first keyboard. I loved the blue switches though, and still do.

But I only recently started seriously getting into keyboards and such a few months ago when i switched to the DVORAK layout. Its been about four months since, and I promised myself I would get a new keyboard when I hit 100 words per minute. So I sold off my Razer and am typing with my new Noppoo Choc Mini with blue switches! I love this little thing. Its the new model with the detachable USB cable, by the way.

I thought the next step down the rabbit hole is to join this forum... so hi guys. I'm probably looking into new keycaps next...

Welcome to geekhack! I hope you're content with at least the spacebar on that board, because there won't be much options for it. Luckily, I think the white spacebar will mesh with a nice number of custom sets as opposed to the black one.

Aren't Blues great? I LOVE clicky switches. I'm typing on Red right now, and I'm just not content. I find myself bottoming out just to get some auditory feedback. And luckily for me, my damn backspace stabilizer just started squeaking. URGH.

I printed a piece of paper with the Dvorak layout on it, and used that as a cheat sheet   :) I figured it would be better to start getting the letters into muscle memory right from the start. Took me about two weeks to be able to type at 30 wpm. Took me only two months to reach 90wpm. I didn't use any special methods, just typed stuff out on 10fastfingers.com

Yes, unfortunately the spacebar is hard to replace. But the white colour does indeed go well with more options than the black in my opinion. Do you know any good websites to shop for keycaps? Currently I've just been looking at ebay, but the selection seems a bit limited.
The sound is my biggest reason for selecting blues  ;D I liked my friends brown switched keyboard too, but went for the blues for the clickyness.

You're on the right site for custom caps, pretty much. You can check the Group Buys subforum, or get 60 posts under your belt, figure out a set you might want, and post in the Classifieds.

Welcome,
Interesting about the Dvorak stuff, I read up a bit on these but could never decide to start learning it. I'm a very slow qwerty typer so I would be ideal candidate for it but when someone uses other language than English I guess it may lose the whole point in learning anything else. I'm sure a layout like Colemak would be nicxe for English but I doubt the very same would be ideal in Hungarian. So I am stuck with qwerty.
But it's always nice to read about alternate layouts and people's experience with them!
