Stabilizers Under G81-8000HPBUS-2 Key Caps
« on: Fri, 03 May 2013, 11:26:53 »
I know some G81 keyboards have the stabilizers molded right into the key caps.  Does anyone know if this is the case for a Cherry G81-HPBUS-2 keyboard?  I want to complete my current Cherry double shot set for my Rosewill and want to be sure the 2x numpad keys especially are compatible.

Thanks!

If you're talking about the black ones you'll be fine as all the keys are normal EXCEPT the spacebar and 1.25x mod keys are all offcenter stem and pad printed so worthless to you.

Ok, thank you for the clarification flynn.  And yes, I knew the bottom row are all useless.

Also, to further expand on this for others out there:  Are all G81 double shot key cap boards safe to use?  I do not think I have ever seen a picture of the "stabilizer-built-in" key caps that was double shot.  From memory they are always lasered or pad printed...

you are correct that only laser/pad keys have that weird built in stabilizer part

For double shot g81 boards you are good with the following things to keep in mind
-stepped CapsLock = off-center stem
-Full touch CapsLock = center stem
-1.5x mods are center stem & double shot, which is good
-1.25x mods are off-center stem & pad printed on 8000 series boards.
-1.25x mods on 3000 series should be center stem & doubleshot (except windows/meta). this one i'm not 100% certain on
-space bars are always off-center

Only later production PBT (beige or hellgrau) G81 have the built in stabilizer in the keycap. Sadly this can also include dyesub, so be careful. Doubleshot and POM have never had them as far as I have seen and always have normal stems for use with MX. Still I do not comprehend why they went to the trouble to make another mold with the PBTs... to be nothing more than irritating.

Example of old production lasered:

I have never seen old production which are also much thicker than today, with the good font have built in stabs yet. Font is a give away so know the differences.
