My two cents for ghetto-lube keyswitch
« on: Wed, 10 July 2013, 12:57:15 »
I just did a ghetto-lube of my QFR red switch. I didn't open the switch, I just press the switch all the way down, and lube the entire side of switch housing.
I used this one: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/3/AutoFluidsChemicals/LubricantsPenetrants/PRDOVR~0280813P/Permatex+Ultra+Slick+Multi-Purpose+Synthetic+Grease,+85+g.jsp?locale=en

what I got after this? Well, typing on it is like a topre silent keyboard.  :)

1.  it's significant quieter than before. I can now type fast in the office cubic without annoying others. I think it's because the lube make the up stroke much quieter.
2. It's feel more smooth but stiffer, I feel the key become heavier, but it's up and down smoothly. It's kind feel like the key is wet. I guess it could be that I put grease not oil.
Overall, once I get used to the stiff, I actually like it a lot. Smooth, quiet, perfect for use in office or at night.

Just wondering, what should a proper lubed red switch feel like?
All those keyboards will be lost in time....

Sounds like you got way too much lube in there...which isn't surprising given how you did it.  And it's not because you used grease.  I use a mix of Krytox oil and grease and it makes it lighter.  Too much grease will slow a moving part down and make it sluggish and/or have higher resistance.

A proper lubed red should feel almost frictionless and lighter than before.

Thanks, I did over-lube it because a small amount of grease didn't make much difference, I guess it's because the way I lube it it's not a proper way.

But, it works on some level, it does make the key switch much quieter and smoother. And it only took me less than an hour.
