Cheap double sheet case design
« on: Thu, 18 July 2013, 13:50:45 »
I was thinking of the cheapest way to make a "case" for a keyboard and was thinking the GON style is onto something. However cutting the acrylic layer that is in the middle is slightly complicated and adds cost. If dust inside the case was not an issue you could just use a bunch of identical  sized tubes to act as spacers between two plates. One plate would be the bottom of the case, and the other plate would literally be the plate the switches are mounted onto. At this point you skip anything that would make complicated screws be required and just the two sides together like a litster style or ErgoDox (which I think is based on litster style).

If done with stainless steel, the case would be relatively heavy, and you could even do a LZ-GH style bar on the bottom to add weight. I think this style would give an interesting minimalist/industrial look to the case in addition to being very affordable. It would be a great option for GH60, Phantom, and any future DIY pcb setups.

I'm interested in trying to throw this together, I think we only need a slightly enlarged plate (Phantom may not be a bad place to start) with holes beyond the PCB space, and a second identical sized plate with matching holes + switch/stabilizer cut outs for the top plate. I think everything else can be acquired at any hardware store.

If this has been done or suggested before I'm sorry, I tried to read up on this forum and didn't find it anywhere. I'm also terrible at drawing so I'm trying to get the idea out so someone else can put it together and essentially.....do all the work  :p

TFR did this with his longcat project :)

It's a nice, cheap idea. I was actually going to make one like this for the GH60 sometime next week along with a few other cheap alternatives. If people are interested in a phantom one I can do that too.
