Which keyboard?
« on: Fri, 26 July 2013, 18:22:43 »
I've been looking at keyboards and I think I would enjoy either cherry mx clear or cherry mx white.

I really only have these 2 options:

FC660M w/ MX Clears, $119.99 - http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/item/shop-mechanical-keyboard-by-sw/leopold-fc660m-mechanical-keyb/lid=35722930

KBT Race w/ MX Whites, $124.00 - http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=210

Any other suggestions? I want it to be around the TKL area.

Do you like audible feedback or do you prefer a quiet tactile bump? It really comes down to what you like more.

Those are some rare switch choices :P

MX green is similar to white, though I don't think either has any advantage over mx blue switches since they pretty much just take more force to press and mx blue has enough force to keep you pressing them by accident and enough tactile feedback to let you know you pressed the switch.  Cooler Master makes some MX green versions of their keyboards.  The QuickFire Rapid is pretty well made and is made by the same company as Filco.

Also be aware that the KBT Race uses some non-standard keycaps which makes it harder to put custom ones on.

I like the audible feedback of the blues although they are loud at times.

The sound the key makes is one thing but most importantly the tactile bump is most important to me.

I don't plan on adding customized keycaps as they keys on both keyboards are PBT.

Sounds like you'd prefer mx clear.

MX white/green/blue has a drawback you may or may not care or be aware of:
The reset point is above the actuation point.  This means you need to raise your fingers up a bit to get them to reset otherwise you'll feel a bump and slight 'tic' noise, but they won't click or actuate.

Brown and clear both have theirs at the same point, slightly after the tactile bump.  You'd think that you might stop pressing immediately after the peak of the bump and not have it actuate, but the inertia at the bump makes it pretty impossible, especially with clears.  So if you "float" right at the actuation point, you'll have more reliability with the browns or clears.

The one down side on that KBT for me would be the right Shift key.  I'd be hitting the Up arrow a lot.

I'm sure I can get used to both layouts without many issues.

I'm just trying to figure out what are the better switches and better quality. :)

Thanks for the reply.

I think I might get the WASD V2 with clears, the barebones version withouth key caps for $109.99
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-v2-87-key-barebones-mechanical-keyboard.html

And then possibly buy a PBT set from qtan or from classifieds instead of paying $50 for the V2 keyboard with ABS keys.

There really are not that many options when your looking for cherry clear or white switch boards.

If you want other recommendations be more specific and give us something to work with, what exactly do you want to know?

Nobody can tell you what switch you will like it's all personal preference and even that changes from time to time.

You can also look through the review section and see what people's thoughts are on other boards.
