Realforce 87u Questions!
« on: Tue, 23 July 2013, 09:45:28 »
Hi geekhack members, long time since I posted here.

I believe it was over a year ago when I bought my QFR blue switches and looking for a new upgrade. The keycaps I bought from WASD are now getting oily and thinking about trating myself to a topre keyboard. I just don't know about the price and have never tried one out before.

Was looking at an 87u 55g keyboard: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless&pid=rf_se1800

Is there any place that can ship to Canada for cheaper?

Is it worth dropping 250-300 dollars on a keyboard itself?

Typing on an 87u Type S right now and I'd say it's worth the investment. I'd go either variable or 45g uniform IMO, but 55g is supposed to be really nice as well. Definitely worth the money. The keys aren't feeling oily btw, they're getting shiny, which is what ABS caps do. The PBT caps on RF boards last years and feel great as well. I have a 2 1/2 year old 103u and its keys feel just like my brand new 87u. Feel free to ask any questions :D

ek is probably the cheapest.

i'd say go for it.  you may really like it or you may hate it.  if you end up not liking it, it shouldnt be hard to sell off in the classifieds for only a little bit of a loss.  think of it as a rental fee  :D

It's all personal preference but myself I favor the 55g Realforce. I also have a HHKB and 45g is the lightest I would go. Other Topre users said RF 45g felt mushy &  lighter than HHKB, so went with the RF 87u 55g. But like I said it's all about personal preference.

What's another good keyboard that is cheaper than a 250 dollar realforce?

Looking for a good quality keyboard but not that expensive.

I just recieved my HHKB this week and, IMO, this keyboard feels far superior in terms of feeling and sound than my cherry MX brown and I think it is worth every dollar spent.

However, you should expect about 340$ for it (shipping and customs fees included), at least, that's what it cost me (I live in Quebec), you can always go to http://www.thefinalcost.com/ to see how much it will cost you.

Go for the RealForce.  I am confident you will like it.  But if not, the resale market is very strong for them, and you will be able to get most of your money back.  So it's not like your investment will go to $0 the day you open the box.  But you may lose 10-20%, or less if you decide to sell it right away.  Just save your purchase receipt, so you can prove to the buyer that you only used it for 21 days or w/e.  But I don't think you will need to test the resale market, Topre boards are that good.

What about the Leopold FC660C on EK it's only $180 compared to $250 realforce.

That again depends on your needs and budget, whether its 60% or a TKL. The Realforce & HHKB have nicer keycaps.

Love the space bar :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
