Dilemma between switch decisions

After spending a lot of time with a QFR I've come to the point where I dislike the amount of space a full sized keyboard consumes on my desk. Though my QFR has blues and I went down to a Fry's to see if they had any keyboards with Blacks(which they did) and when I tried out the reds it felt like a whole entire different switch than when I tried it before purchasing my QFR. I think I fell in love with them right there but I'm not entirely sure due to the fact that I only spent 10 minutes just mashing keys practically instead of being able to type actual passages. Should I just buy a QFR w/ reds and see if I will continue to like them just as much, because previously I disliked them the most of all switches but over time blues have seemed to feel heavier and heavier.
P.S. I own a brown keyboard as well that is used by my dad but I can give a Mechanical KB to my mother/sister regardless so it won't be at too much of a loss.
I might as well add as a question, how much of a difference does thick PBT keycaps do for typing? I was looking to get a set but wasn't sure if they're just an aesthetic appearance or if they actually change the way a switch feels due to the thicker material.

It is unlikely that the feel of the switches would change in such a short time.

Perhaps a lighter spring, such as in reds, would suit you.

Blacks can feel very heavy after only a short while typing.

I have blues, blacks and red, and like all equally.  And Topre.  And buckling spring.

I started with a Brown Leopold. We had a rocky beginning. I thought I hated the browns and was convinced that the Reds were exactly what I was looking for. I got my Red Filco MJ2 (TK+) in the mail and doted on it for a few days. Days turned into weeks but I was losing my love for it quickly. And then I hated it. I hate typing on Reds. So I shelved it and I went back to my brown leopold and I love it more and more each day. I'm not a huge fan of the look of the keyboard: not bad not great either, but I'll tell you this much: browns rock.

I might try Clears soon, but I'm not convinced it's absolutely necessary. IMHO the browns were the way to go. Note though: I don't game on my CPU at all: it's all development & analytical work.

And I also tried a Blue MJ2 and Blue Rosewill. I thought the Rosewill felt like a piece of trash compared to the MJ2 (though the switches felt about the same): hated them both - just don't like the Blue experience. Filcos have a pinging problem (some people disagree with this but here's how you check: hold a key down and press it down further as you slide your finger off it - so that all of the tension in the spring is released immediately). Some keys ping and others don't. Perhaps they all do, but some ping so quietly that you can't hear them. The Filco MJ2 should actually be listed as an instrument it makes so much d**n noise.

Some people like the PBT feeling, some don't.

Whether it makes the typing experience better is entirely subjective.

I quite like it, but then I also don't mind the smooth feeling of Ducky ABS keycaps.

Overall I would probably say I prefer PBT.

I think the more time spent typing on different switches you start to learn what you like and dislike. Sometimes a switch you really did not like at first becomes a favorite.

The 'feeling' of different key caps is definitely a real thing however how much is a personal thing. The best thing is just to try out what you can and go with your gut.

I have a hard time using anything but clears, it is a blessing and a curse.

You might just be getting tired of the same old thing and are looking for something new/different.

I find that I will really love a switch for a while then get bored of it and start using another; of course I have access to various boards to do something like that. My first mech-board had MX Blues... I've actually never went back to them--I rotate between Blacks, Reds, and Browns and actually I find that I can always fall back on Topre. Not sure if it's the same thing you're going through but just my 2-cents. Hope you find something you like again.

I was kind of in a similar situation when I first got my Filco MJ TKL in brown. Thought that the reds were the end all be all since it was a limited edition and sold out everywhere. I had to pay premium for it at one point and went right back to the browns after using it for a week.
