Switch Tuning
« on: Thu, 15 August 2013, 13:24:59 »
When someone says they've "tuned switches" what does this process involve? I'm starting to see this term more frequently and I don't have any idea what this process involves.

Spring swap to a preferred weight, lubed, and sometimes stickered. Pretty much, any mod you can do to a switch is tuning.

ALSO: This would've been a perfect question for "Simple questions. Simple answers."

Wouldn't you just say the springs are swapped, lubed and stickered?

Well, you could, but it's easier to just say tuned switches than list what's been done in its entirety.

Kinda like with a car. When you tune a care, you don't say, "I changed my injectors, plugs, timing belt... etc" you just say, I got a tune-up, or tuned my car.

There's also the belief that some springs are better than others (individually) so some people go through the process of finding which ones are perfect and feel the best. That could also be considered tuning. It's a really vast term that has many meanings.

To add to this I believe builders like GON go through and try out every switch making sure they all 'feel' the same and have the desired response.

I believe some may include the lubing and clipping of stabilizers in this.

edit: internet lagging bad....

This would make more sense. If I had stickered some switches but didn't install springs, I wouldn't say "switches are tuned" people would want to know if the springs have been swapped, lubed, etc.

While we're on the subject. What does stickering do for you? Is it exactly like it sounds and you just get lag on the switch return?

It 'adds' stability to the swtich, perhaps more so if switches are pcb mount.

IMO, it doesn't make a noticeable difference, I use them for the looks.

If you check out the Simple Questions thread, there's a FAQ that has this question. I'm only pointing you there because Photoelectric posted this cool video showing what it could fix.

They might look nice but on plated switches, but other than that, they don't make a difference at all in my opinion.

Stickers will go well with the translucent switch top group buy that is wrapping up.
