Simple really, they made some of the most solidly built keyboards ever to grace a desk! The high number of working units 20+ years on is a testament to that.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

IBM made the best keyboards because not only can they be used to type up reports but also to take out the zombies when they come.

IBM made the greatest keyboards, because they paid homage to the typewriter.  IBM keyboard design is directly related to the wheelwriter, which is an evolution of the Selectric.  The keyboards IBM made heralded to an era before computers.  Placing an IBM keyboard on your desk shows the progression of technology from the begening of last century, all the way until now, and will continue to do so.  An IBM keyboard will still grace my desk in 50 years when I'm using some 59 gazzilion petaflops RISC CPU'd desktop.

IBM keyboards are the only ones that you can use both as a keyboard and as a deadly weapon.

@rays first post, zombies are to OP for IBM keyboards, you need an old IBM CRT to take them out. :))

It is the feel of typing on an IBM keyboard that makes it the best keyboard.

IBM made the best keyboards because they used buckling spring key switches. These key switches feel different from other switches and in the oppinion of us "old timers", they just feel better.

I don't own a model M or F to try out IBM's, but I've used their computers and seen them a lot at stores. They're built like fing tanks. I'm suprised that they last so long, but then I remember, its IBM.

I've been wanting a model m for a while, and this lust has ended, only because it has been replaced with a lust for a model f. I forgot to snipe an auction with a model f for $30 shipped, and I'm still kicking myself.

I want that super good BS. Ever since hearing model f is better than m, I've wanted to get one in my hands and feel the BS that everyone says is good

Tinlong asked WHY IBM made the best keyboard.

My answer:

IBM made the best keyboards because they were expected to and also expected themselves to.

Prior to producing the beam spring, the Model F and the Model M keyboards, International Business Machines had already made a name for itself producing typewriters and then punch cards, time stamps, calculators and then computers. They saw themselves as defining business machines for the world. The IBM PC, the Personal Computer, was seen as The Industry Standard.

IBM was accustomed to producing typewriters capable of lasting a lifetime.  When they built their keyboards, they did not wish to stint on quality. So they built keyboards the same way as their typewriters, intending these to be lasting, reliable, low maintenance and good quality business machines worthy of the IBM name.

I'll giveaway two eyebeem model f 6019273 this time(you've to pay half of the shipping), one on dt and one on gh.

Rule is simple. States why ibm made the best keyboard. I'll pick the best answer on Sunday. (2013 NOV 17 gmt+8 08:00) NO count down cock.

IBM made the best keyboard ever because they had a very clever plan to start a WW3. Their plan was to make the best keyboard ever and let people appreciate it, then they stopped producing it so that people would start getting used to lower quality keyboards. They knew that after many years, their ultimate keyboards would still be intact, and still be the best keyboard ever. They knew that people would start fighting for them at some point. They would first offer reasonable amount of money for them, then crazy amounts. Then people would go crazy for putting some to trash 30 years before and, being unable to suffer this situation, they would start committing horrible sins. Then it would scale up until there is a WW3 triggered to get the last ones.

Very clever plan indeed...

IBM made the best keyboards because they thought enough to include enough space on their keyboards to allow you to land your personal aircraft on it, making it the ultimate business keyboard.

IBM has been making input devices for more than half a century hence they know what human beings put each device through.  They had to design and manufacture a product that not only provides extreme user comfort but can withstand immense conditions that would destroy most other keyboards.

They have engineered a product that symbolizes the essence of American Business in the 1960's, a tough, no nonsense product that excelled in providing an enduring service to it's users.

With that commitment IBM had always produced exemplary devices to help people be more productive and effective within the workplace.  The IBM Model F had defined that clearly when it was the first keyboard produced that no other business manufacturer could match in quality or style.  Hence we now have a perfect example of what can be achieved when a large corporation truly cares about it's design, engineering and early ergonomic capabilities.

In fact today the IBM Model F is a symbol of the United States in it's heyday when they could/would dare produce world-leading technology that celebrated their dominance within the business world  :thumb: .

No-one ever got fired for buying IBM.

And presumably no-one ever got perma-banned for winning IBM in a giveaway.

Also does everyone know this is a matrix board, not a conventional alpha-numeric typewriter-style?

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

What! Wait, no fair! You said the contest was over tomorrow! I have been working on a story for you. Here is the rough draft:

After squeezing under the door with the help of the Terminator, the mountain collapses on top of you. Trapped inside with your beautiful lover and supplies to keep a core group alive for decades, you set to work saving the world for the human race.

Surveying the decades–old technology that is excruciatingly slow, but sufficiently robust to survive both the ravages of time and almost any physical or electrical attack, you see the one actual true keyboard (not the Model M imposter), the IBM Model F. Immune to viruses that exploit the diaphanous “windows” operating system, and sufficiently iron–clad to survive untold abuse, this is the device that you will employ to communicate your instructions to lead the underground and save humanity.

Years later, with the Model F showing some nicks to the case, a slight shininess on the keys, and a couple of caps missing altogether but stems intact, you are still using it, typing out messages to coordinate the worldwide underground. Suddenly, the machines burst into your control room and you grab the most solid object around, the Model F, to use as a shield while you and your family run for your lives.

Having escaped the attack but trapped underground in a collapsing cavern, you reluctantly take the Model F apart and remove the 3 metal plates: the bottom pan of the case, the perforated front plate, and the backing plate for the circuit board. Handing out the plates to use as shovels, you and your family dig yourselves out to the surface, escaping to continue to lead the resistance movement.

The Model F is not a mere “human interface device” at all, it is the keyboard that has continued the survival of the human race itself.

Arnold was crushed under the door helping John get to the keyboard.
