I don't know which to buy
« on: Sun, 18 August 2013, 20:07:08 »
Ok guys I need a new keyboard. The corsair K70 or Ducky Shine 3? I like the LEDs on shine but I like the look of K70, not that I don't like the looks of the shine. Both are with Mx browns. Both have customizable LEDs where you can chose which keys stay on. But the ducky has those fancy patterns. So which should I buy I'm torn between the two.
I really like the media keys on the K70 but I really like the look of the Ducky and those LEDs look so sexy.

If it's between those two, the ducky shine 3 for sure.

Is there a specific reason why? I really like the multimedia keys though. Is there a external set of keys that have play pause next previous and a volume wheel? Which keyboard is more reliable.

If you prioritize the media keys, then the K70. Otherwise, Ducky.

Either one is a good choice, personally I'd take the K70 because corsair fixed their problems with their newer line of keyboard (full-mech, not some half-rubberdome crap) I really like the exposed plate type thing Corsair has been doing as well, and the media keys are a nice touch.

As for the Ducky, it's a keyboard, that glows, in fancy ways.

Welcome to Geekhack!

I'd go Ducky (I have two already, both are great).

I heard that model m is not compatible with modern keyboard, is this true?

I'd warn you about the Shine 3. While the cool LED stuff looks cool now, you probably won't get much enjoyment out of it after about a month. The K70 would be great if you are into it's aesthetics as well.

Model M is fine.  You will need a good PS/2 to USB converter (as most modern computers do not have PS/2 port).

I am using a Model M on a Mac with no problems at all (other than missing an Option key).

After you buy a PS/2 to USB adapter then you would be fine. I use an Adesso converter that I found on amazon for like 8 bucks and it works fine. I love it and even tried it with gaming. No hinderance for MOBA and RTS...it even helped me be more precise. I didn't suffer too much with FPS gaming, but it took a good 20 mins to get used to since the keys are heavier and loud. Use Autohotkey to map the function keys as media keys and you will be fine. I personally don't need media keys because I use the side switches on my Deathadder 2013 as volume control, so I'm fine. I used to be a person so into the macro keys and media keys, but after getting addicted to this hobby, I found better alternatives.

Actually, if you have SDL port on the keyboard, I can highly recommend one of these: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270955553909

Wow thanks for all the responses. I wasn't expecting this. :) I think I'm going for the Ducky. I really like the looks but is it comfortable without a wrist rest? I really like my K90 wrist rest but I want a ducky now with N-key rollover. And all those LED modes are sexy.

Third party wrist rests are available from a number of sources, including right here on GH (especially if you want a custom-made wooden one, and very nice they are too).

Is there a reason why? I don't really rest my wrist but I use the wrist included with my K90 and a palm support is that ok to do?

Looks tend to not matter as much over time.

Sooooo true. I got a 2012 Naga partially because the green backlighting was JUST THAT AWESOME! Now I hardly even notice it any more. And then there are people who see it sitting on the desk and say "WOAH THAT MUST BE THE GREATEST MOUSE EVER IT LOOKS SO AWESOME!"

I bought, and like, my Naga 2012 for different reasons, but I've gotta admit that when I see it, or my Lachesis, sitting on my Goliathus pad I do think "man, that does look sleek."

Oh, I like my Naga all right. I find it useful when I'm working in blender and use the side buttons instead of the INCREDIBLY awkward keyboard shortcuts.

So is resting palm ok? I don't like to have my arm suspended to type.

Ok so I'm set on set on the Ducky. Now I would like to know whether it's ok to rest my palms or not I would like a wrist rest to rest my palm I get strain on my shoulder when I type with my wrist 2-3 inches above my desk. Would it be ok to put the wrist rest near my elbow about 4 inches away from my wrist and let my arm rest on it? I really don't know since I came from a laptop keyboard and let my wrist rest on the computer it self besides the touchpad.

This is all personal preference. I personally hate wrist rests, but it all depends on what you like/at what angle your arms are.

Difficult to tell - everyone is different.

I get by just fine without a wrist rest.

Others swear by them.

You can always try without and see how you go, and then try a rolled up towel or length of wood or something to see if it makes any difference.

Oh ok. But I read on http://ergocanada.com/ergo/rests/ergonomic_usage_of_wrist_rests.html.

My Shine 1 is just under 2cm tall at the front of the case, and another 1cm for the OEM keycaps, so just under 3cm total.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If you get a wrist rest, DON'T put your wrists on it! That's bad.

What's the proper use of a wrist wrest then? I don't use one as I haven't seen a need to. Just curious.

For the palms. They are very misnamed. If you put your wrists on it, then you can get MORE strain of the tendons, and that's bad.

I'd put my palms on it. My arms get tired since my desk is kinda tall and I don't have a keyboard drawer. I also lean back on my chair so I get comfortable also I don't like to hover my wrists I like to rest my palms not my wrists. That's why I want a "wrist rest" to put right besides the keyboard. And not rest my wrists.

Ok guys I will be buying a ducky shine 3. I also will be buying this "wrist rest" http://www.maxkeyboard.com/max-keyboard-ergonomic-foam-wrist-pad.html
Is that a good wrist rest?

I've never used it, But I'm skeptical of the slope. The slope is kind of what you're trying to get rid of...

My desk is higher so my arm would rest on the edge and it hurts. If I put the keyboard at the edge it's awkward and doesn't feel right I would unconsciously rest my wrist on the desk. And when I game I use a palm rest on my K90 I'm fine. But I want a Ducky and as that doesn't come with one I was looking. Would there be less slope if I use that wrist rest?
