evoluent vertical mouse
« on: Wed, 21 August 2013, 03:48:53 »
I noticed there isn't a single thread about this mouse on this forum. Does anyone here use it? Is it better than a 45 degree angle mouse like the anker / wowpen type vertical mouses?

I'm pretty sure there has been quite a bit of discussion about this mouse, although idk how much of that's still left, since ripster was fairly active around trackballs and some vertical mice afaik, so some of the info may be gone.

Anyways, what I seem to remember about it is that the general opinion is that it feels as "bad" as a horizontal mouse as it requires your hand to be too upright, whereas the 45 degree mice seem to feel the most relaxed and natural.

I don't own an Evoluent but out of curiosity I picked up the Wow Pen. It is very comfortable and at a fraction of the price.

The wowpen is only 800 dpi though.

What about this delux m168 mouse?

I've recently tried the Zalman FG1000... it's a horrible idea to use it as it's advertised—bending your wrist to achieve horizontal pointer movement. That's my main issue with truly vertical mouses.

I have had both and I love the Wow Joy Pen and hated the Evoluent.

In my opinion, Evoluent got everything exactly dead wrong and it was the most horrible mouse I have ever used.

I am not a gamer, so if the Joy is slow I wouldn't know. I did replace the switches with Omrons and it was a great improvement.

The Anker might be worth trying, it looks like it could be good.

IMO, the Evoluent is perfect for a standing desk, meh for a sitting desk.

It's much better than Microsoft ergonomic mouse.
This mouse has 3 buttons. One for fore finger, one for middle finger and one for ring finger.
Normally mouse only consist of 2 buttons for clicking, one for fore finger to click and one for middle finger to right click.
I found the button at the bottom of the mouse which use ring finger to press is not useful.
So I just set the button off, sometimes I accidently press the bottom button which is not comfortable.
That's the only problem of this mouse.

I love my Evoluent VM4R.    It took very little adjustment time, has a good DPI, and has enough buttons for gaming.   I actually got two of them now -- cable went out on my first one and I got a new one under warranty as a replacement and I took it apart and replaced the cable so now both work.

I use a Logitech Trackman Marble at work but prefer the Evoluent if I have the desk space.

I have used an Evoluent version 3 at work. It is difficult to get a good grip on it. The buttons are big and soft.

The version 3 had some "prediction" in it, so that it would align itself to straight vertical or horisontal lines when I moved it close enough. That was really annoying.

I've mentioned it several times.  I use one at work and I love it.  It really helped with my wrist pain. Awesome

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and wanted to join as I needed some advice about which mouse to get. I'm glad I found this thread because I am starting to get a little wrist pain with my mouse hand (right-hand) and was considering getting one of these Evoluent mice. I am a bit of a gamer and mainly play Audiosurf and Borderlands 2 and after reading some reviews of the Evoluent mouse, it seemed that it could have problems when playing some games, particularly FPS games.

So, I am now considering whether to get a trackball mouse like the Logitech M570 but having never used a trackball before, I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not? I currently use  a Logitech G500 which is fantastic because I can select different DPI settings and use it on nearly any surface. Does anyone have any experience of using a trackball for gaming, can you recommend it? With a game like Audiosurf I do a lot of quick left and right movements and so I'd need a mouse with a decent DPI speed.

Thanks for any help.

I'm a trackball lover but I couldn't get use to a thumb controlled trackball. It could just be me but I think you can get more control and range with a finger controlled ball. Most would likely say a mouse is faster than both.

I've used the Evoluent mouse, anker and wow pen joy. The Evoluent is my _least_ favorite and was the most expensive by far. It's too large and the thumb hold is awkward on the 3rd revision (they supposedly made it better on the 4th revision). It's also too vertical to the point of being unnatural and the three face buttons are awkward. Very few mice come with three face buttons anymore if you notice, and I keep wanting to use the middle one as the right click rather than the actual right click.

I much prefer the anker and wow pen joy. I would say that the wow pen joy is more comfortable to hold, but that the anker is more fun to use. Both are also much more affordable.

Thanks for the replies. I've been reading lots of reviews on various trackball mice and the vertical mice, it seems that all have their pros and cons and seem to particularly run into problems when gaming. The Anker mouse you mentioned oneproduct has had some complaints about how your little finger can slide off it as it doesn't have a rest for the finger and this can cause your finger to drag around and inhibit mouse movement.

I think for the time being I'm probably best sticking to a traditional mouse and continue using my Wrist Donut wearable wrist rest. I don't have major pain at the moment but perhaps if my pain does increase significantly then I may have to look at getting a vertical mouse or trackball.

your little finger can slide off it as it doesn't have a rest for the finger and this can cause your finger to drag around and inhibit mouse movement.

This is precisely why I like the Wow Joy Pen so much. I allow my last 2 fingers to "drag" but this is actually helpful and increases accuracy.

With the ring finger and the thumb opposing each other, and the ring finger down, you can get very precise movements.

I also want to try the Anker, I have not used one yet. If only there was a left-hand mouse besides the Evoluent .....
