Yet another "First mechanical keyboard" thread.
« on: Sun, 01 September 2013, 14:45:40 »
Hello!

This is my first post on Geekhack. I did want to make an introduction thread, but I didn't know what to write.
Since I'm new to mechanical keyboards I can't really give you an imagination or pictures of my boards.
However, I live in the middle of Europe and hope that we can share each others experiences and stories about the world of keyboards in the upcoming time.

Which switch?

I'm really interested in getting a mechanical keyboard, since I'm getting sick of using Rubberdome keyboards.
Like, I guess, most of the people asking for help I do a lot of everything. My time on the computer is about 6+ hours a day in total,
which contains school work (writing and programming), gaming (however not a lot) and normal web surfing.

Because of that fact I kind of already chose the MX Blue to be "my" type of switch, since I read that a lot of people recommend the MX Blue for typing.
I love the fact that it gives me a click feedback.
The biggest Contra against these switches is the noise coming from them. I kind of talk with my friends on TeamSpeak all the time I'm on the computer and I fear that this could really annoy them.
I have a condenser microphone that is a good amount of space away from me (it's the only way I'm able to do it), so the noise would definitely be transmitted.

The alternative to MX Blues would, of course, be the MX Browns. I was able to do a hands-on on a Logitech G710+, but as this keyboard has O-Rings I couldn't get the bare feeling.

Which keyboard?

The next problem would be the keyboard. My current favorite would be the Filco MJ2, but it also is the most expensive Cherry one I saw.
I see lots of people rave about this keyboard, how good the building quality is, and so on.
I think because, as I read, mechanical keyboards last a good amount of time it would be worth it.
My preferred layout would be TKL with an ANSI key-layout.
I don't care about backlightning, however it's nice to have, but not a must.

I would have to pay about 170€ for a new keyboard when (I hope this is allowed) buying at KeyCo (UK) because of the Pound-to-Euro course, as well as the unbelievable shipping price of 20€.
What I found kind of unsatisfying is the fact that the Filco comes with ABS keycaps. I have no experiences, but I read that they wear off very quick.
For this price it would be a shame if they'd do that to me. A set of PBT keycaps would cost up to 80€ too.
Would this be worth it?

Another keyboard which often gets recommended would be the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid/Stealth. It looks way cheaper, and in fact it is, I only would have to pay approx. 90€.
Is this the better option?

I know that it is my decision and I have to know my budget, but is the up-charge worth it? What would you recommend me?

Best regards,
esclu

Welcome to GH!

I would recommend a Topre RealForce TKL.  You get the best swtich (Topre) and you get PBT keycaps.  Also you will save money ultimately, because you will buyer fewer keyboards, trying to find the right one.  You will have started with the best one.

Topre switches are nicer than MX Browns.  The closest you can come to Topre with MX is lubed, stickered, Korean-springed ergo clears, with PBT caps.  This will cost you more than any Topre keyboard.

I would recommend a Topre RealForce TKL.

Hello!

The problem is, that this would cost me over 240€. I don't have that much to spend and I would want to try something out if it costs me that much.

Wait.. was that a troll?

If you're talking about eth0s's post I'm not sure. But I would recommend Topre as well to be honest.

This is a sensitive subject around here. But since there are only Topre supporters so far in this thread, I'll go ahead and be the voice of reason...

Topre switches are really expensive rubber domes.

There I said it. Cherry MX switches are awesome and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The Quickfire Rapid and XT keyboards are awesome. They are made by Costar and are nearly identical to the Filco keyboards that cost twice as much. It is a highly recommended keyboard for a reason.

Get the Filco TKL with browns. It's probably the most affordable / available where you are. The QuickFire Rapid is a great board, but for the price of the brown board in Europe you're almost to the price of the Filco. I have a Filco with browns and I love it. Btw I also have Topre boards, and I love them as well. They're not for everyone though. Get what you can afford for now, you can always upgrade or buy something different later when you have more money.

Another option would be a Leopold FC700R. There is a vendor from Indonesia selling them here on the forums for $120 + shipping + paypal fees (not sure what that amounts to in Euro shipped to where you are). They're nice boards with PBT caps.

He's right.  GH has collectively chosen Topre as the best switch of all.  MX couldn't even challenge because the votes were so far in Topre's favor.

Is there a MX Blue TKL version available? Didn't find one in a quick search.
Also, what can you say about my problem choosing a switch?

I really would like to do, but the up-charge is too high. 90€ QF(R) - 160€ Filco.
For the Leopold: I fear that the import taxes of my country for countries outside the European Union isn't worth the hassle.

Well I found MX Black and Red ones (TKL), but no Blue ones.

Welcome to GeekHack!

To be honest, a flico would be just fine. Getting a Topre will save you money in the long run, since you will end up buying one anyway, and it comes with PBT caps.
You could just get a Filco from TheKeyboardCo and buy some PBT caps on ebay from one of the GH vendors, if you really don't want to get a Topre.
