HHKB Pro 2 custom key layout
« on: Sun, 30 November 2008, 03:57:51 »
Hey all ... from the "in case anyone is curious" department ...

Starting with a black, blank-key HHKB Pro 2, I bought a set of blank-key white/grey keycaps, and put together a custom layout.  I pulled in the grey modifier/return/delete/etc. keys, and the white number keys, and kept the rest black.  Here's what it looks like:

Personally, I'm thrilled with the result, although I do wish that the grey was darker.  (Well, if I fully had my druthers, the white/light-grey would be dark-grey/medium-grey, and a red escape key would be cool as well.  But I'm happy with what I have.)

Home/Work:  Custom Filco FKBN87Z/EB and SGI 041-0136-001 chimera (original white ALPS, not simplified, rubber-dampened)
Gaming:  Wolfking Warrior with custom-colored layout, HHKB Lite 2 (Rubber dome)

Nice.  I see you're "cheating" a bit on that top row.  ;)

I'm sure everyone's seen mine by now:

By "cheating", I assume you mean that I'm getting some visual clues about where the number keys are.  And yep, that's right.  :)

I have to admit that's my motive for doing this.  My touch-typing is weakest with the number keys, and sometimes I just want to enter a credit card number or other numerical information without necessarily finding the home row.

I didn't know that geekstuff4u had gotten into the game, so I went through crescent-shop to get the keycaps from PFU's Japanese site.  (The keycaps at PFU are 4500 yen (about US$50), before shipping/commission, so geekstuff4u is probably a better deal, unless they shaft you with the shipping.)

I'm planning to sell the keycaps I'm not using, if that interests anyone here.  (It will be a mix of black and white, so I don't expect a huge market.)  I'll post a thread/photo on the marketplace when I get a few moments.
