Bought my first mechanical kb!!!
« on: Fri, 13 September 2013, 13:56:16 »
Hey Guys,

I finally bought my first mechanical KB! I snagged a Xarmor U9 for $68 on sale locally. I replaced an old Razer Lycosa and wow, what a difference. It took me a  little bit to get used to the change but I don't think I can ever go back to membrane style keyboards again.

Now comes the problem...this site. Damn you and your lovely looking keyboards and fun keycaps. I really didn't need another thing to sink my time and money into. You bastards...

Does anyone know a good site for keycaps that I can get shipped to Canada? I'm looking specifically for replcament WASD/Esc and up/down/left/right keycaps.

Is there a specific size/type of keycap that fits my UL9? Or will any Cherry cap work?

Congrats!  Before I found GH, I only owned 3 mechanical keyboards in the past 10 years.  After finding the site last month, I added 3 more keyboards to my collection.  My friends think I'm weird now -_-  But welcome to GH!  Happy keyboard collecting! :D

Welcome to Geekhack!

It is not downhill - ignore those silly comments.

Just leave your wallet at the door and check out all the wonderful keyboards and key cap sets you can get.

There are lots of Canadian members around here too - watch out for any meetups that might occur.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The thing is, do you guys collect these keyboards to keep or what? Do you really fully used them? I supposed max is using two boards one at home and one at work. So why do you need more than two???

I use different ones, depending on mood.  Some are back-lit, those I usually keep at home for gaming.  Others I take to work and loan out, I've got four or five in rotation any given week.  Sometimes people buy them off of me, some I've given away, and then there's the project shelf for interesting keyboards I plan on modifying/altering/making work at some point.

For me personally, it's to try out new ones for a long enough period to see which ones you like and use most.  For example, my Challenger Pro and Blackwidow Ultimate don't come out much anymore, it's really all down to my DAS P-S and apple aluminum BT.  I use the DAS for typing and the BT for gaming as I can move it around a bunch, angle it, and can see the buttons at night.

Although it has to be said that lately, I've been using it for most of my typing, too...  :-[

Thanks!  Honestly, these are really all cheap finds - okay, mostly cheap.  The blue cases at the top are two SkiData boards, then there are a couple of TG3-BL82 keyboards, a Dolch unit (the suitcase-looking jobbie), and miscellaneous IBM/Unicomp boards that I really need to complete and then get rid of.  Garage sale time!   :p

I'm a bit confused by the use of the word "need".  I think you meant to say "want" ;)

I have 9 mechanical boards with 6 different switch types.  I supposed I am just looking for the perfect switch, but seeing as how I am too easily pleased, I like all of them and switch between them from time to time for a bit of variety.

On that top shelf looks like one or two SkiData keyboards.  Thick double shot keycaps, Orange-on-Charcoal.  Very nice keyboard.  Not for nubs.

I am just a beginner.

There is not enough room in a laptop case for mechanical key switches.  If there were, the laptop would be considerably higher.

No reason why you should not connect an external keyboard to a laptop.  We have a laptop in the conference room at work connected to a projector.  It has always had an external keyboard connected (Dell dubber dome unfortunately), as no-one likes the built-in keyboard.

I have taken my KeyCool in to work to replace the Dell rubber dome on my workstation.  Currently I am trying to work out how to carry one of my Model M keyboard in through a long walk then commute.

Get out of this keyboard website while you are still fresh and naive.

I'd like to buy such a beautiful keyboard shelf like shown in the picture. I have eight keyboards already.
