Should I just get another filco or look elsewhere ?
« on: Mon, 14 July 2014, 13:02:13 »
Just wanna say that I have absolutely loved my filco with browns for a long long time. Unfortunately I didnt take the best care of it and I just want a brand new keyboard. Is there any reason not to just get another filco?  If not where should I buy one ? What other brands should I consider hows ducky and wasd keyboards new code line unless? Tenkeyless is a must for me. Is there any other switches similar to browns I should consider ? I dont really want to get anything just because its cheaper than filco I just want the best keyboard possible.

AFAIK, KUL 87 is the new cool kid on the block. It has clears which are what browns were supposed to be( according to some people here).

Haven't used them, but they have a more pronounced bump than browns. They are harder to activate than browns if I recall correctly

I have the KUL 87 in Clears, and I think it is every bit as good, if not better, than a Filco. Seems to feel more solid somehow. As a Filco user, I can recommend the KUL 87. But you can't go wrong buying a new Filco, either. :)

^ This. Filco's have been around a longtime, they make great boards, I've owned a few of them.

I also just picked up a KUL w/ clears and I really like it and would probably recommend it over the Filco.

Eyesmiles did a great review on it if you're interested under the Keyboards topic.

How about a topre board?  My browns at home just somehow feel lacking to my topre at work.

Also don't forget the barebones WASD V2 if you plan on replacing key caps anyways. They are also available w/ clears.

Is there a review of the KUL by someone who knows about keyboards? I would like to find a good review not written by someone who is touching a mechanical keyboard for the first time.

Got one with Greens and it's good.  You want the BEST, get a GON keyboard then you shall know what true keyboard perfection is all about :thumb: .

I like Browns, but I love Clears. Particularly ErgoClears, but stock Clears are very nice too, better than Browns, due to the larger tactile bump. The springs are different, too. They have a more progresssive profile, so they are almost as soft at the top of the movement and harder below the tactile bump movement.

Also another vote for the KUL ES-87. I don't own one, but trust the opinions of the experienced GHers who have bought one and commented about the board.

It has Cherry stabilisers instead of Costar, so they have a little tab that softens the bottom out on stabilised keys. If you don't like how this feels, you can clip the tabs on the stabiliser sliders. I much prefer Cherry stabilisers to Costar, mostly due to the ease of replacing caps without the fiddly inserts and the slider housings of Costars that can foul thick keycaps.

If you do get a KUL and it turns out you don't like Clear switches, you should be able to sell it again for close to what you paid.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Is KUL really so good? It seems there are people saying good things, but also some geek hackers have been selling it in the classifieds.

The only KUL I recall being sold in the Classifieds was dante's, and he was only selling it so he could buy another KUL with different switches.
