Best way to obtain an IBM Model M Spacesaver

I've been searching Ebay the last few days but the pickings are pretty slim (only 1 currently I believe). Is there any reasonable way to get an IBM Model M Spacesaver I'm not thinking of? Is there a close enough equivalent that I'm overlooking?

I got mine from another member on the forums (Thanks GirlShark! <3) but I think eBay and the Classifieds are the best places to look. If you can't find any, maybe you can try The_Beast's 60% (or 65% depending on who you ask) Model M mod.

They are regularly available on eBay, but be prepared to pay upwards of $300 these days.

Classifieds or eBay, plus patience.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I though it involved sacrificing a rare CC, then making a pentagram on the floor out of DS PBT keycaps?

I wouldn't go that far, but it's not much tougher than a bolt mod:

Of course my case painting skills could use some work (but that was my first one).

Luckily I was on the can when I read this because I nearly sh*t myself laughing.  I lost two bidding wars on ebay before I finally got mine NIB.

Two were put up on eBay this past week. The first went for $345, the second, which has an original box and styrofoam, is up to $410, with one day left. Just wow.

Yeah, it's basically to the point where I just don't think I could ever pay that for a used 20 year old item. I understand that quality things last, but I'd at least like a warranty on something I purchase for several hundred dollars. Shame really, I may be just forced into something else mechanical in the meantime. Every keyboard I see and like unfortunately ends up being ridiculous to obtain. The other model I liked next to the SSK was the Dolch PAC6X keyboards, I believe they're a Cherry G80-3xxx. Seems like those are also ridiculously hard to get for less than $300~. I either have expensive tastes or a curse.

I've noticed a trend in the forums that most typing oriented people lean Topre, and I really love the look of a stock white/grey HHKB2, but I was kind of hoping for something cheaper to get my feet wet. Would a Poker II be a decent first mechanical board?

A Poker II is a great first mech board IMO, it doesn't get any better than a 60% layout. If you want to try Topre though, you could get the Leopold FC660C, which is a little more pricey than the Poker but a little less than the HHKB. If you don't like it I'm sure you could resell it here very easily and not lose much money.

Best way to currently obtain one seems to be to wait until prices get down again...

... but will they ever? I mean, it's one of the best and most beautiful keyboards ever made... thanks IBM  :-*
