The Topre Experience is 75% Thock
« on: Sun, 26 July 2015, 16:26:37 »
I was studying at IKEA - yes, IKEA of all places, long story - and I noticed a peculiar thing about my HHKB.

IKEA was very crowded today, and really loud. I normally love typing up my review notes on my HHKB, but today I just wasn't enjoying it as much. Noticed I couldn't hear the thock at all, and it made me perceive the that the Topre switches were less tactile than they actually were. It felt like my fingers were numb, even though I was feeling the bump of the rubber domes.

Needless to say, I think the most prominent part about the Topre switch is the sound it makes. Without that sound, the tactility of the switches are just mediocre.

I use mine with my headphones typically and fell in love with the silenced version.  Additionally, I despised MX Blues and Greens and White Alps, due to the noise and the feel, so I've have to disagree.  My HHKB is very noticeably tactile.  It could be a number of other factors, such as typing on your lap, getting used to the feel, being distracted by what your working on to the point of ignoring other things, and so on.

True! I also did spiceBar's landing pad mod, so there could be some decreased tactility from slight decrease in travel. I love the silenced version, too, without the clack. I think you're right, it was probably one of the other factors - being distracted. It was so loud in there that I couldn't feel or hear the usual Topre goodness.

On any other day, and in any other area with average loudness, I love both the sound and the feel of my Topre's. I guess I just found it weird that my fingers suddenly felt numb typing on them there.

Part of what people think of as feel is actually sound...so it isn't a surprise that it felt a lot different than what you're used to...But are they still tactile?  Of course they are..obviously so too...

It probably seems more obviously so if you're used to using other Topre switches that have less thock than the HHKB...

Thorpe experience is oneness with cup rubber.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

So true. When I have to use my Macbook keyboard, I always make sure I'm running Keyclick http://www.sustworks.com/keyclick_pref/index.html -- makes the whole experience *much* better.
