bluetooth mechanical
« on: Sun, 24 November 2013, 23:24:17 »
Looking for a compact mechanical bluetooth keyboard for my new iPad.
http://matias.ca/laptoppro/mac/ looks decent but I fear the 'ALPS-inspired Quiet Click Switches'...

Cherry MX available anywhere ? or will I have to go cu$tom (and where) ?

  • Missed another sale.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Why would you want bluetooth?

Stock cables are ugly, cables are ugly, you can type far away from your computer, like if you're on your bed but your computer is on your desk or your computer is next to your TV in the living room and you're on the couch.

True but there are options like custom cables.

And bluetooth keyboards have some bad sides, Like latency issues/ battery life and etc.

Better to just get a normal usb board

So how do you propose plugging a standard board into an ipad?  And really, latency issues?  Is this 1999 and we're all the next super pro gamerz? Thirdly, battery life is measure in the multiple hundreds of hours.

This is probably a stupid question, but to mechanical switches use more battery power that a rubber-dome style keyboard?

Is this why we don't see as many wireless mechanical keyboards?

See the ad nausem "wat bout our latencee" and "battery life on wireless is terrible" comments that haven't changed in over a decade.

There are a couple already linked and the community is working on a breakout board for the gh60 project as well.

My view would be the biggest reason there aren't more is due to weight and bulkiness.  It seems that most wireless keyboards are marketed for the slim lover/ultra portable user and that's not really mechanical switches.  The kbt pro isn't the slimmest of mech boards even because of the additional wireless parts put inside.

This is very true.. good point!

I have only just got myself a wireless mouse after years of not trusting the technology... I don't think I am ready to jump across with the keyboard yet  :D

I just got a new one recently that has a 1250 hour max battery life (mouse that is, the new g602 from logitech).  Overall, it's my third wireless mouse and I think I've only had to replace the batteries in my oldest one once because they wouldn't take a charge

The easiest solution is buy an iPad Camera Connection Kit. This enables any keyboard (including mechanical) to connect via USB to your Ipad. I have personally had success with this method on my iPad 1.

Alternatively, you can try a Bluetooth Keyboard Adapter, like this one: http://handheldsci.com/kb.
This will work with any usb keyboard. Qtan sells the Neo 87 wireless (http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/category/cateogry1-name/catId=4340539) but I'm not sure if it will work with the bluetooth adapter.

I own two Matias Minis for Pc (not the laptop pro) so I can highly recommend the matias quiet click switches. For total portability, a backlit tenkeyless with bluetooth would be the best option but I don't think there are any as yet.

Regarding latency over wireless, its absolutely fine for casual typing and office/web use. However for gaming, my relatively new wireless keyboard and mouse (bought for casual use when I plug my PC into the TV) are pathetic and extremely slow. Accuracy is laughable. I suspect even some of the faster typists here could run into issues like missed key presses. Maybe I just got a really dopey keyboard and mouse?...

Still if you're not typing at light speed and gaming in fast paced games, what's the issue? I like the look of the Filco Minila Air, though I think I'd buy the standard Minila first.

Bluetooth is usually for portable device, but mechanical keyboard are not quite portable, in addition either Bluetooth device or mechanical keyboard means "not wallet friendly", so the market of Bluetooth keyboard is even smaller.

When typing this message I am enjoying my lovely Filco Majestouch Minila Air ;D
