Topre 55g vs 45g, silent vs. normal
« on: Fri, 20 December 2013, 14:12:55 »
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both the 55g and 45g weighted Topre and silent vs. normal boards?

I have heard and seen on charts that the 55g is more easy to bottom out than the 45g.  Is this true?

There are lots of threads on this. You should try searching. If you have any additional questions, it would probably be best to post it on those threads, not start an additional thread (as long as it's a fairly minor question, like the one you posed here).

I've read a few boards but haven't found much comparing the two weights other than some people calling one or the other squishier.

Well, IMO the best Topre switches are on the 45g of the HHKB Pro 2 Type-S.

Second, I like the ergonomic variable weighting of the Realforce 87U Silent.

Getting a HHKB is kinda a win/win situation, because the rubber will get stiffer in time anyway, so you'll have the option to test out 45g as well as 55g later down the road :p

The HHKB already starts out a bit stiffer IMO...they feel that way to me anyways..not sure if it is because of the mounting or what.  They're somewhat in between a normal RF 45 and RF 55....

The 55g's reputation for 'stiffness' is undeserved.  The average mass produced membrane used in Corporate America will be stiffer than this.
