PS/2->USB adaptor and Scroll Lock
« on: Fri, 01 May 2009, 19:43:43 »
So I bought a really old PS/2->USB adaptor.  A "PI Engineering Y-Mouse" device, which promises the ability to connect up to two keyboards or mice to a single USB port.  Apparently, they still sell a newer model at $60.  The one I got was in a sale of unwanted equipment, probably from when USB first came out and didn't take over the world, and cost quite a bit less.

I hung it off my spare M, leaving my main one connected via PS/2, and it seems to work-  amusingly, the lock leys on each board affect both.

Except for Scroll Lock on the adapter-connected board.  It doesn't register or set the light that I can see, although the one on the PS/2 connected board will illuminate both boards' LED.

Is this typical of USB adaptors?

I sort of like... just for the sheer obscenity... the concept of using the adaptor to hook two full-size PS/2 Ms up side by side.

My cheap USB adapters are completely unimpressed by the host computer's PS/2 keyboard settings.

Fixed.  Apparently this is a very "clever" adapter; you can program it to do things like "use Scroll Lock as a Macintosh Power button".

Apparently, you can also configure it to force it to use right alt as a Windows key.  Not too shabby, although considering it's 12 times the price of the Blue Cube, I'm not sure I can reccomend it wholeheartedly.

Well, I lucked out... the only Geekhack-enviable item at the local college's scrap-shop (formerly home to all sorts of weird PCs and their keyboards, now just a few of those noxious iMac keyboards that will never ever sell)-- $1, still in the box.

We'll know you're serious about her when you have her register an account here and formally meet your geekhack family.  :)

Wow, that is a horribly formed sentence.  I fixed it for your reading ease and pleasure... and my OCD.

What do you mean by "post?" ;)

That's actually pretty normal, but completely correct.  I didn't even touch a keyboard all weekend.

You might want to watch out for user Amanda, too.  I think that's his daughter.  She tends to clean up in the Arcade.

I wouldn't worry too much; I doubt they frequent the forums often.  I instigate much of the sailor talk myself.  Even though I post some of the things I do, I try to keep the verbage such, so you at least have to think about it for a second instead of laying things out there explicitly.

Unfortunately, no.

Did I mention, though, that she knows how to drive a stick shift?

That was horrible; I am ashamed of myself.

There's not anything dirty to report (sorry :) ).  She's an amazing person, and, without getting into a whole lot of detail, I can honestly say that I have ever met a girl that I had so much in common with.  We met this past Friday at the First Friday art show in South Town here in SA.  We got to talkng and the rest was history.  Much different than the "superstars" everybody seems to be here in San Antonio.
