my mechboard journey so far - kinda funny to think about it :)
« on: Wed, 12 February 2014, 10:05:51 »
look at my signature. my very first mechanical keyboard was a WASD V1 full 104 key with mx browns (since i wanted something close to the tactile bump feel of the rubber dome). i's not there, because i gave it to my brother for his birthday, since i haven't been using it for a while due to the form factor mostly. then i got curious and wanted to try a linear switch because i read everywhere how detrimental tactile switches are to keyspam and double tapping (prevalent in mmos and fps - my most played genres) so i went with the QFR with blacks. from there it was curiosity about the reds and then i finally wanted to try the blues and different layouts too (the boards in my sig are in chronological order from bottom to the top).

at the moment, i am using the black MX QFR at work and the MX blue filco at home, for typing and gaming and i like the tactility, but i think blues are a little too much; today, i have come full circle and ordered a mx brown filco as i am fairly sure that mx browns are the ideal middle ground for typing and gaming alike (tactile, but not clicky).

it's kinda funny and it's been a funny year since i started this "hobby".

any of you guys have some funny stories?

P.S. i still haven't tried the topre, maybe i will when the novatouch comes out.

It sounds like you and I started around the same time.  I began looking at keyboards just before WASD came onto the scene.  I wanted to get a full-size V1 but couldn't hold out that long, as WASD kept delaying shipments.  To tide me over, I went with a TG3 BL82 and promised myself that I'd get a fully customized WASD when some new colors came in...

The colors came, but rumors of PBT came as well.  I figured if I waited for colors, I may as well wait for a higher quality plastic.  Besides, I had a pretty nice keyboard to enjoy in the meantime.  I decided to wait for PBT.

... It never happened, though.  Meanwhile, WASD started talking about their v2 board.  I had adjusted my desktop to the BL82 and realized that a num pad would only get in the way.  So I decided to wait for WASD's TKL.

The TKL premiered, and the time had finally come to take action... I looked down at my BL82 and realized it had been "tiding me over" for two whole years.  The keyboard had only gotten better over time.  Black switches seemed muddy at first, but my finger muscles adapted and learned how to press each key with just enough pressure to activate.  I can type like a ninja on this thing.

... which makes sense, as I do a lot of my typing in the dark.  I then realized that WASD's v2 didn't have lighted keys and decided to stick with the BL82 for good.  It's a great keyboard, and it's grown on me.  The CODE 87 came out some time later and didn't even tempt me.

Mine started with a Ducky Shine II. It was a fantastic board, but I wanted to try something new, so I picked up a 55g Realforce 87u for home and a Pure Limited with blues for my laptop/work. I too have come full circle and am now switching between my LZ Aluminum Skin with vintage blacks and my Topre daily. It's insane to me. I never thought I'd be dropping this much on keyboards, but I easily constitute it because between college/work/gaming, I spend about 10 hours/day typing. If you're going to do something that much though, you might as well like what you're working with.

I began the same: MX Browns; Blues; Blacks; Reds. And at first I liked MX Red switches, but got into an IBM SSK and let the Red KB go. Now I'm reconsidering an MX Red KB as an accessory KB. Kind of hooked on my Realforce 87U/55-gram boards. I'm sure all of us have spent a lot more money than we should have on keyboard; and it's yet to come to a close.

I started with MX Browns and tried most Cherry MX switches.  I find myself going back to browns and ergo-clears. Even though 55g Topre is my favorite switch, I find myself switching to browns/ergo-clears when I get fatigued with 55g Topre or simply want a different feel.
