Keycap shape and size questions from a noob
« on: Sat, 28 September 2013, 12:14:56 »
So I have bought a CMStorm QFR as my first real board, and I already had these but they are taller than the standard keycaps that came with the QFR, which I can't really handle.
I'm looking to purchase the standard doubleshot ABS set from here and purchase some other keys to get a bit of a retro multi-colour effect going on. I wanna know how I can tell if other keycaps from other sites are going to be in line with the profile of the doubleshot ABS keys I want as the base?
For example, if I purchased these would they also have a different shape and profile to the doubleshot ABS white keys &/or the standard keys that come with the CMStorm QFR?? Sorry for the confusing link-filled essay, but I don't have the money to waste on buying custom caps and then find they are not right! :)

CM Storm QFR uses OEM profile.  It's a common profile seen on most keyboards such as Filco, Das Keyboard, Ducky, WASD Keyboards, Topre........ etc.

I'm not too sure what profile QWER Keys use, I think most people only buy 1 single novelty keys so profiles are generally not important in that case.

Signature Plastic uses a profile that's similar in height to Cherry Profile.  But both of these are lower than OEM profile.  http://keycapsdirect.com/images/faq/row1keycap.jpg

Leopole uses a profile that's between OEM and Signature Plastic/Cherry profile.

As for Keycool, from what I've heard they're OEM profile, so it will match with your stock QFR keys but it will not match with Signature Plastics.

Hope this helps.  :D

Thank you for the responses guys, I'm a bit drunk now but I'm sure I'll work out the OEM Vs other profiles in the morning!I've got some of the whites I linked in the post, so will just have to hope they work with my overall plan, and if the ones I buy don't I guess I'll sell then on here and buy something else!!!

This bit me in the butt as well, as a lot of key cap vendors use a Cherry profile instead of the OEM profile that the QFR comes with.  I ordered a number of novelty keys without knowing about the different profiles  :-[
