Question : Cheap Blank Keyboard
« on: Tue, 11 March 2014, 15:20:04 »
Alright, I'm a long time lurker first time poster/ just created an account. I work for a college and I got asked by my boss to find 80 Keyboards that have blank keycaps. Normally, I would just say well you can get a mechanical keyboard with blank keycaps relatively easily, but this being a business we need them relatively cheap, I cannot find any rubber dome or mechanical ones with a low enough price point. I am working on a list of companies to go to with this issue to see if I can get a volume deal, but I was wondering if you guys knew any models or could recommend any companies I should talk to. I don't care if they're mechanical or not I'm more looking for price point then anything.

I know this one: http://www.getdigital.de/Blank-Keyboard.html
Not sure what the OEM for them is but maybe you can talk to getDigital about a mass order.

Out of curiousity, what do you need blank keyboards for?

Hmm... Maybe special shortcuts for some program? Or very special layout...

Welcome to Geekhack!

I don't think you'll find one much cheaper than that which BlueBär listed.

Any mechanical keyboard will cost at least 3 or 4 times that.

Another alternative might be to sand or otherwise remove the legends from even cheaper rubber dome keyboards, but that would be somewhat labour intensive and the results might not look very pretty.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You should look into the HHKB type S. The blank option seems like exactly what you need.

I think you missed the 'cheap' requirement.

That keyboard is perfect! Only problem is I'm in Canada, I'm going to send them an email to see if we can negotiate shipping and pricing on that keyboard. As far as usage goes, I work at a College and we have a typing course, currently they use some sort of rubber layout on top of our keyboards but they don't work on all keyboards and are easily destroyed/stolen. So my manager suggested to the program head that we get keyboards with blank caps, without of course looking into where or how we would get them. That job fell to me :P. Thanks for the help !

Oh, fast typing courses! Yep, that might be helpful.

Oh, if your college still has stock of old Model M, you can order new sets of blank keycaps for them... not sure if it will be cheaper, though :)

I think you missed the sarcasm. :p
