WASD Keyboards: How do they rate in comparison?
« on: Tue, 25 February 2014, 19:57:07 »
Are WASD keyboards better built than, say, comparably priced Filco M2 or a Max Blackbird?
For some reason I'm getting back into Cherry MX switches, actually MX Blue switches. After
using my 87U/55-gram exclusively, I want another KB around, one I can mod when and if
I choose, which is why I just picked up a CMQFR: inexpensive and good for R&D-ing re mods.

I'd really like to read some users' opinions on WASDs V2 87-key keyboard, if you would.  Thanks.

I have a WASD v2 (browns) so feel free to ask me any questions and I'll see if I can answer them. To be completely fair it is my first mechanical keyboard so I can't give it a fair comparison. The main selling point of the WASD is the customizable caps but the dip switches are also nice (if you want native dvorak/colemak support, or maybe a HHKB style ctrl+caps swap). If none of that appeals to you then you are probably better off going with the Filco, I have heard many good things about them. I also know the Filco is compatible with a few custom cases but I'm not sure about the WASD.

Thanks for the offer. I wanted to know how WASD KBs fare over time. I know Cherry MX switches fail, but I was curious to hear if WASD's build quality was as good or superior to Filco and Max Blackbird. The Max keyboard has many of lighting options, which mean nothing to me; but I was under the impression its build quality is supposed to be good. I've had short-term experience with Filco Majestouch 2 KBs, but none with WASD and Max.  If I come up with any questions specific to WASD, I'll be in touch. Thank you for your offer to help me out.

WASD keyboards have a good overall build quality. The weak point lies in micro USB connection as it tends to be a bit fragile.

Excellent customer service

I found the same with the CMQFR. I use felt self-stick pads to hold, force, the micro USB connector stay firmly in place. If I didn't, the connector might loosen, creating an intermittent connection. If the USB connector/connection is the only shortcoming, I may be able to do with it what I had to do with the Cooler Master. Knowing any shortcomings is important to me. Thank you.

My connector seems ok but the cable can easily fall out of the "gutters" if you pick the keyboard up and move it around a bit.

+1 for the customer service. I had all my questions answered quickly even during the holiday season. I have head of others getting replacements and other things if needed.

The WASD V1 has a very solid USB cable gland, although the cable is rather short. They used a costar reference design, and it's very good.I still use mine daily at work.

WASD is good but it's not as good as a Filco.

The main selling point is the customization, the customer service of WASD and for me - they're located within a 20 min drive from me.

The thing for me is that I like pbt caps over abs caps anyways so WASD customization isn't really a selling point for me since I will be changing key caps anyways.

I can confirm on the customer service. After messing up my order, they paid for shipping and sent me a replacement board with no questions asked, even after I had all the switches changed. The customisation is good, but like above, ABS caps tend to shine after heavy use.

And in terms of the USB cable, you could always get a custom one from the D Squad or Pexon PCs depending on where you live.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?
