NMB 8756C+

Brand new clicky Space Invaders for $25 plus shipping! I had to buy one, but there's one left. Now if I can only find a SI board with a regular ANSI layout. Does such a thing exist?

That's one of few things I'd eventually like to nab new. I've got some used, but can tell they'd be better new. Especially given how the click mechanism works.

Edit: Wait, why are you so sure they're space invaders? Near as I can tell unless it's a RT101 (or whatever that basic model was that was similar to that) it seems to be random if it's SI or dome or whatever else.

The C in the model number typically means click mechanical, AKA Space Invaders. The only way to know for sure is to pop off a key cap, but since that's tricky on SI boards, I wouldn't want to take a chance by having the seller do it.

I'll post a review with some pictures when I get it.

Here is a very useful GH thread as well. I'm 95% sure this will have SI switches.

The DT wiki also cites a couple sources that say it's space invaders.

Just got the keyboard, and it's got space invaders. Interesting feel to it for sure. The right shift feels a little sticky, so I'll have to see if it loosens up with some use. Dante's right about them feeling a bit like MX greens, though I haven't tried Topre, so I can't comment about that. I do like how they click on both the way down and up--it sounds like I'm getting double the work done!

Haven't been able to pick mine up yet... how's the overall build quality?

It's got the same feel as most of the early 90s Alps boards. I'd say it's about mid range. I need to spend some time with it to really get a good feel for it.

Got this one of mine out.

If yours are like mine, then you might want to pop off the spacebar and switch the heavy switch (that's the blue one in the pic) to somewhere else. I also flipped the spacebar around backwards.

It kind of looks otaku, but other than WASD, which I did black like the modifiers that were grey, the rest is actually a dark forest green - and those letters are visible with enough light.

Also, people say that they break easy, but I've ripped alps switches entirely out of their sockets before. Never had a problem with these though. But I use a pci slot piece of metal to pry them off, and even to pry open these switches.

Seriously wicked!

Did you paint the case and dye the caps?

What board is that, anyway?

That's exactly what I did. I've done that to all of the ones I rotate through except the Chicony with monterey blues that I got NIB, I've left that one as normal.

I find it interesting that in that picture, even though it's in direct sunlight you can't tell the different shades as well as you can when it's in.. direct sunlight. But I think those were taken way back when I was first reassembling it after I was done.

It no longer has the sticker on the back, so I'm not sure which model it is. There were three in the box when I got it, IIRC I left the RT101 alone and it's still there in case something happens to the others, which were random models like the one of the thread. I've also got one with the WASD dark blue, and the rest red. I like how the modifiers made the reds different shades on that one. The one I did red was originally the worst looking - super yellowed and such - but now that it's been painted and dyed it looks pretty good.

I left the RT101 alone

I wish that there was a better way to identify keyboards than "RT101" because I have had RT101s that were all kinds of things, most often plungers over domes, I would say.

Black Space Invaders are great, and I would really love to have one in true ANSI layout, but without pulling a key cap it is almost impossible to be sure.

Yeah, all three of them are Black Space Invaders. I think they all had different model numbers too, even though I didn't really see any differences in the two that I dyed and painted.

I was anticipating this problem, but to me the space bar weight seems in line with the rest of the keys. I like the ninja look, but I'm going to keep this one stock since it's so pristine.

That's interesting, it always seemed too high to me. Only one I can think of as similar would probably be an AT F.

Also, you should have PBT keycaps of a fairly decent thickness. If they were ABS they would have melted instead of dyed.

At some point I'll try to get a picture of it that shows the color difference and that the keys can still be readable in the right light. I don't blame you for wanting to keep it as is though, that's why I left my Chicony that way (but also for that one I'm not sure they are PBT). This one, though, wouldn't have looked bad just cleaned. At the time I just didn't want it with the color scheme they did back in the day.
