I Hate Meaningless Non-Descriptive Thread Titles
« on: Tue, 04 March 2014, 18:43:06 »
Why do people make up meaningless thread titles?

(and I won't bother to list any except "simple questions and simple answers")

There are so many threads about so many subjects here, I have little choice except to ignore most of the threads with titles that do not stir some particular interest in me.

Occasionally, I later discover that something which I was truly interested in was being discussed under a doggerel title that I dismissed in a nanosecond.

Also, it is better to start new threads than to bury important information in a mountain of TL DR.

That is my opinion, anyway.

Thanks.

Oh lord I see this all the time. Constantly trawling stack-overflow and other programming forums, the way people pose questions boggles my mind sometimes.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

**** all these threads. If I can't gather everything I need in the title, then **** it. Why should I bother reading the body? In fact, let's remove bodies from posts. Only titles.

That's because programmers and geeks generally are tech, math and hands on people. They aren't writers, lawyers, or anybody who is versed with the use of language.

I am actually very impressed that Soarer speaks English. I can comprehend 95% of what he says!

This thread was nothing like I thought it was going to be from the title.  Now I'm mad.

this has nothing to do with "help pls" thread titles.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Help Please !

Is a completely valid title as long as it also mentions the type of help needed.

Help with dog grooming or help with DVD burning? Don't make me dig through crap to find out.

OK, if it said Fohat, Help Pls! I would assume that somebody's Model F has problems.

Everytime I write to Soarer, he knows I have a problem with a teensy. And everytime I write to Ivan, it's about some Cherry-related issue. :))
