PBT+Backlight= useless?

I've been considering some caps. Either black or white. But are the leds useless with this combo?

There are some photos of white pbt with led's if you look around. I know they are in the simple questions thread maybe even in the OP. Depending on the led's and the board you should at least get an underglow around the keys.

I think its a nice effect specially if you're just aiming for a very subtle led effect. I think it depends on the look that you are aiming for.

Imho it depends on the thickness and color of the keycaps. The Ducky Yellow for example has thick PBT keycaps, but the LEDs shine through:



But the thick grey keycaps I'm using on my Ducky Mini which has very bright LEDs will not let any light through and the result is only a rather faint underglow.

I don't have a shine or fully backlit board, so YMMV I put a set of the black on black Ducky keycaps on my premier. Only the Esc and WASD cluster are backlit aside from the mod keys. The light does not shine through and I only get underglow. You can't really even tell from this pic.

Current daily drivers : HHKB Pro 2, HHKB Lite in a server rack, A few Filco numpads in brown and blue, Pure Pro in Brown with Rainbow PBT, CM Ninja in Brown with white engaved PBTs, two Model Ms 89 and 91 with a few red esc, Ergodox full in clear with blanks, a jdcarpe built 40% awaiting some Round 6 keycaps, and soon a Gon custom.  Hundreds more on site at a mechanical friendly work site where I am the purchaser.  If it exists, I probably have used one!

not useless, consider the color.

white PBTs work best with leds. If you have other colors, they may be very dim as a result.

depends on the LED as well. Red LEDs don't penetrate as well as Blue/Violet LEDs because of photon properties.

yeah, and I think you're stuck with thin PBT. Wonder if anyone has tried using Imsto PBT doubleshots on backlighted keyboards.
