I used to use Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 on Windows 98SE and it was an excellent suite, but then I switched to Office XP when I upgraded to Windows XP.

I'd pretty much forgotten about WordPerfect, and assumed it was dead, but today I came across it again after a frustrating Google search for an unsolveable table-related Word problem. I see that the current version is WordPerfect Office X4 and it still looks great, but I'm not sure I'm going to cough up that amount of money now that I already have an office suite (why not do some sort of switch from Microsoft Office promotion? - prove you currently use MS Office, download a 60-day trial of WordPerfect and if you decide to buy it after 60 days, you get a discount).

So, does anybody here use Corel WordPerfect?

Or what about anyone who uses something other than MS Word or Corel WordPerfect? I tried OpenOffice.org a few versions ago, but quickly tired of looking at mangled versions of my evil and proprietary (yet at the same time de-facto standard) MSWord .doc documents.

The trouble with WP is that it has changed hands so often that it is now just a brandname being slapped on a succession of products, attempting to capitalise on its former glory.

I know nothing of the latest version, except it's nothing like WP 4.1, the version I knew and loved many years ago. I even miss having to write the printer drivers for it, LOL.

Sadly, MS has done such a good job of becoming the standard that there isn't really a choice for business/serious users. You can't risk sending a document prepared in a different package in case it shows wrongly and you embarrass yourself.

Let's face it, MS has done so much to mangle its file formats that it can barely maintain compatability between versions of its own programs without insanely complex bloatware, so how can competitors hope to do so?

what ever you do, don't use openoffice. I'm a free software freak but openoffice is just plain bad software. I used it to write twice for 30-40 page papers with formulas and I tell you the thing almost made me brain cancer.

if you don't have to worry about file exchange/compatibility, you can try LEd. Too bad I use Linux, it's the best latex editor I've ever seen.

WYSIWYG has its problems. Despite the problems with OpenOffice, I still think it behaves better than Microsoft Office. Stupid auto-formatting...

Actually, I remember using Word Perfect 5 for Mac OS 7.5 ...
It sure seemed like things just worked better back then. But that's what happens when Microsoft comes along. They ruin everything.

I used to use WordPerfect 8 for Linux, and recall it got harder and harder to keep alive as distributions advanced.

Then I went to Texmacs for the academics-stuff I was doing.  Now I work at an OpenOffice shop.

I tried Google docs, and it's OK for the average user, I think, but I need more horsepower out of my office suite.  I am totally loving MS Office 2007.  I can't wait for 2010 to come out with 64-bit support.
