What was your most ridiculous keyboard related purchase?
« on: Wed, 02 April 2014, 03:28:05 »
I'm just curious as to what others have to say on this subject. I just spent more getting a plate made for my Race 2 than I did on the keyboard itself XD.

Yeah, I'd say my digilog case was definitely the one before this, but hell, at least that did more than support switches haha.

I know! I don't even have it on a Keyboard right now, partly because I don't know what keyboard to put it on.

Maybe I'll build a keyboard exclusively to showcase it, and then put it on display.

um no im talking about the guillotine case, not the ebay case.

i sold my realforce to buy my friend a typeheaven (he wanted a full size and didnt care about PBT) so thats why i dont have a keyboard for it. ive tried selling it but nobody can handle how ridiculous it is.

Non-working Toshiba HX-10, bought only for the sweet sweet spherical-ish Alps keycaps (generic picture from Wikipedia)

Everyone needs “CODE”, “GRAPH”, “BS”, “£”, and “STOP” keys though, right?

Great choice! My 55g Realforce is my absolute favorite keyboard that I own.

Ah, ok. Also a beautiful case. Definitely worth every penny.

My first meck heyboard...

I got a KBT pure. Immediately bought some O-rings for it, a metal case and I'm planning a new set of keycaps+pouch+cable for it... and it's just my first mech kb! :(

I'm just trying to reach my "endgame" sooner then I can move on! haha... though I plan for another full sized mech kb in the future when I finish studying

EDIT: Oh and did I mention, 2 switch tester sets and 2 keycap pullers even though I only needed one?

And i'm still thinking of a unicomp too...

I once paid about $900 for a lot of WYSE keyboards from eBay.... I did manage to make my money back parting them out, but still...  Can't believe I convinced the wife to let me do it.

I'm not sure any of my purchases have been too ridiculous...but my favorite story related to the OP is that I know a couple of Geekhackers who bought a pallet of Model Ms.

Perhaps...

Depends on how long it takes me to gather the necessary monetary resources to make such a purchase. Hoping that by the time the Novatouch is released I'll have enough...

I have way too many, and they're all losers. Such as having my space bar on my F AT drop out on me.

Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

ditto.  I mean, I love it, and it makes it so my KMAC mini and RF look similar enough that others that live with me don't realize I've purchased yet ANOTHER keyboard.  So I guess it wasn't too terrible a purchase  :p

My first keyboard. The Déck Legend. Had to convince a webshop to import it for me from the U.S... Cost me around €250, so that's $340 in today's money.
Though I think I topped that with the Orion TKL Korean custom that I ordered last week... that I am quickly sourcing parts for, such as a SkiData. :P

Maybe also the time I had made up my mind that the Matias Mini Tactile pro was going to be my new board so I bought some old Alps KB's off e-bay for the caps... Never bought one. :(

EDIT: Damnit, I might be addicted.

Ducky Shine Yellow Edition.

Didn't need it.  Don't really use it.

But it's YELLOW!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I had three and kept the 91 SSK. No point in having three of them IMO.

Yes. I bought a Hakko 808 and now I realize how cool nice soldering stuff is. I have convinced myself I need a hot air station now.

The 808 makes desoldering most things too easy.

how many switches do you think you have done with yours? I estimate I've done about 4,000. Plus I did another 1200 or so with the RadioShak bulb iron. Using the bulb iron blows hard.

Does it count that keyboards started my electronics and in particular, soldering addiction? Some buy keycaps... I buy soldering stations and related equipment.. up to $1k to date at least, I think :(

Using the bulb iron blows hard.

i've burnt too many holes with that radioshack iron. No propper holder for it

lol, true. also, the tips only last through about 1-2 keyboards worth of switches. I bet I spent $30 on tips...

Nothing ridiculous at this point, but I'm sure I won't last much longer.

To follow up on my earlier post about buying $900 worth of ebay WYSE, this is what part of it looked like:

The fact that you are looking at this thread is proof.  Any true geekhacker is always looking at their next purchase.

For me, nothing truly significant, $90 for my Pure is the most I have spent on a single item.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

Non-working Toshiba HX-10, bought only for the sweet sweet spherical-ish Alps keycaps (generic picture from Wikipedia)

Everyone needs “CODE”, “GRAPH”, “BS”, “£”, and “STOP” keys though, right?

That is beautiful and in no way ridiculous.

The thing to avoid is...

...determining the total cost of your keyboards and keyboard related items.

THAT would be worth ridicule.

(At least mine would be,)

But this keyboard? It is a thing of beauty!

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!
