Das III keycaps replacement
« on: Fri, 10 April 2009, 05:04:43 »
Anybody known where I can find Das III - compatible keycaps (black - lettered - US layout)? I've emailed Metadot but they replied that don't sell replacement caps. :(
I know a few online shops that sell such things but I'm not sure if these fit on Das.

Any advice?
Please excuse my poor English.

I believe DataCal may sell compatible keycaps, but I can't confirm that.

If you are looking to trade keycaps (blank for lettered), you can probably find someone around here that will do that.

DataCal only list stickers but I'll ask them.
I'm not interested on trading, just some keycaps have their legends worn off, thus I thought to get a full set of new ones.

Oh, okay. I thought you bought blank ones and now wanted ones with legends.  My bad.

Try DataCal.  Let us know if they can or can't help you out.

Metadot should be selling these keycaps (replacement blanks and lettered)...

A lot of us on here already tried to get them to sell us blank replacement keycaps but they gave us the same answer as you got.

I was kinda disappointed with their answer. They sell "pro-class" keyboards but no spare parts. I have to admit that the person who answered my request kindly offered to send me "a few" keycaps but I denied because I need a full set.
Anyway, I've emailed datacal and right now I send a similar request to Keycapsdirect. I hope it will be not necessary to contact Costar just for a set of plastic caps.

Member majestouch is working on getting replacement keycap sets for Filcos/Dasen (???).  I don't know if he has had any luck getting those from Costar or not.

I'm not sure the Filco caps fit the Das perfectly, though.  They seem to be too tight.  I think Ripster is going to try again, though.

I don't know about that. Just recently I swapped keys between the filco and the das and they fit fine.

Sweet.  You heard it from The Pookster! :P

Majestouch (EliteKeyboards.com) hasn't given any updates on getting replacement keycaps, lately, but you may want to keep an eye out for that update, if you don't get a satisfactory answer from DataCal.

DataCal and Keycapsdirect didn't reply yet. In any case I'll keep an eye to EliteKeyboards  too.
Thank you all for the info! :)

Keycapsdirect looks like an awesome company.  I'd never heard of them before.  Their site is nice, too.  Let us know if you hear back from them.  They look like they could make a variety of great products.  They also say they keep blank keys in stock, which may be good for those of us that want those.  It just doesn't say (that I saw) that they make cherry switch-compatible keys.

They do, I've ordered a few hundred in the past for my company's G80s.
Even better they offer customizable insert molded keycaps. You send them the labels in vector drawing format, and they produce excellent quality insert molded keycaps ,or printed/engraved if you wish. Really great company.

Oh, wow.  Then, I would really think those caps would fit on the Das.  Have you tried the caps you ordered for your company on the Das?

Hah, next time you make a company order slip in 1,000 Red Esc keys and sell them here.

Seriously.  No, seriously.  You could sell them here, for sure, if they fit the Filco, Das, iOne, and G80's.

Unfortunatelly all G80s use UK layout thus I was not able to test BS, Enter and a few others. Besides this issue, letter keycaps fit just fine.
Don't blame me for UK layout, I do hate it. When ordered them I was not able to find any black US Cherries stocked in Europe. :(

Back then, I used keycapsdirect services to order custom keycaps (English / Greek) for these Cherries.

Even if I had the time to turn this into a business, believe me you won't buy cheap from me.  With all taxes and shipping costs, making business attractive for buyers overseas is not such an easy task. :)

May I ask what you have to pay keycapsdirect for a set of (blank) keycaps? Or, as they have a $100 minimum order, how many keys do you get out of it?

I don't know the exact cost per set. As I said, my last order wasn't stock keys but a bunch of custom ones (English / Greek letters). If my memory serves me well my company paid a little more than a thousand bucks for 1500-1600 keys, including custom pad printing. I assume that standard ascii keycaps are cheaper.
