Lets Mass Produce the Trampoline Mod
« on: Thu, 07 August 2014, 14:30:40 »
How do we go about mass producing the trampoline mod?

I am not interested in using rubber balls.

Option A:
I want long thin strips of soft squishy foam or soft squishy rubber.   Something that can collapse and give increasing resistance.

I would like to have a way to make a whole bunch of uniform strips of foam or rubber that will fit inside a Cherry MX or compatible switch.  Something in the 2.1mm to 2.5mm length range.

I would like to have all these strips be of a uniform consistency.

All the reports I have read so far describe cutting pieces of of O-rings and other methods that produce a very irregular set of materials to work with.

I know that one of you Elite Keyboard Scientist Engineers out there knows the answer to this question.

I can buy a sheet of foam or rubber.  That part seems easy enough.  How do I obtain a hole punch that will punch out pieces of exactly the right size?

Option B:
How would we get a spring made that can fit inside a Cherry MX switch?
Rosewill RK-9000RE #1 (Broke on day 26, fixed with Scotch Tape on day 42, barely holding together)
Rosewill RK-9000RE #2 (Lubed, still in the box.  I am afraid to use it because it will break like the first one)

A leather hole punch works reasonably well to make trampolines. I am typing currently on a board with trampolines made from a 2mm rubber sheet using a 2mm leather hole punch. They are very consistent between switches and feel fine, but IMHO you would prefer some made from softer rubber and a thicker sheet to get the feeling you were describing in your other thread.

So, a 2.5mm thick soft rubber sheet (perhaps IRHD hardness / Shore A of around 35 to 40) and 1.5mm leather hole punch will probably get you some nice, consistent trampolines to use in your board. They would make contact soon after actuation and progressively increase resistance up to the bottom out point, making for a nice soft, progressive landing for your fingers. You can adjust the feeling by using thicker or thinner sheet, harder or softer material and larger or smaller settings on the hole punch (1.5mm or 2mm).

For most people the silicone balls (IRHD of 60 I believe) will do the job sufficiently well, so I don't think another mass produced option is needed. I'm not sure your specific requirements match too many others. Most people seem to only want to reduce the bottom out noise and jarring stop without affecting the rest of the switch feeling too much. The balls do this adequately.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
