Mouse Bungee

Do mouse bungee's need to have a spring for the upright piece or would a solid rod actually work just as well?

The reason for my questioning is, I am designing one for a fellow GH member and instead of trying to mill out the piece to go on the end of the spring, and source and appropriate spring, I was going to just make the upright piece out of a solid rod and just mill a slot down the length for the cable.

The completely solid rod wouldn't work because your cable will just snag on the end when you move your mouse.
The bungee needs to have some elastic quality so that the "rod" flexes/moves along with your mouse cable when you move your mouse.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a spring although most bungees use one.

I have 2 mouse bungees atm and one of them has a spring which gives it an elastic quality.
The other one is just completely rubber but there's cutouts at the base (bottom) which allows the top of the bungee (the part where your cable goes through) to flex when I move my mouse.

Disclaimer: There is a 10/10 chance I have no idea wtf I'm talking about.

Just to clarify that last part.
These are bungees which aren't spring loaded like traditional bungees.

So here's the roccat apuri which is a rubber bungee.


The rubber part is just mounted on a USB hub.


The CM storm also has one of these and it's mounted on a platform instead of a USB hub


The HUB and platform don't serve any purpose other than mounting the bungee.

having used a couple a couple the upright part does need some 'give' in it, otherwise your not that much better off than if you just used a clip or clamp.
My advice would be to buy a couple of long strong springs and use them for the main part of the 'stem' and then have a small piece of the end to hold the cable and the springs together.

Yes, never having your mouse snag or have to deal with cables etc for your mouse is really super great when gaming and allows you to always have a smooth experience when using your mouse. The bungee I posted I think is less than $20 and is worth every cent.

I got this recently for £3.99 (~$7) and it really is excellent. I'd been curious about them for a while but didn't fancy paying the price that the branded ones cost, can't imagine how they'd do anything better than this one.

They don't. I had the Razer one before and it was total garbage, it used a sticky surface in order to grip to your desk, after a month or so that picked up every tiny piece of dust, hair and dirt it could find and then it just slid around and bearly served any purpose. It was also too tight to use with a braided mouse cord.
My dad has that USB Hub one posted above and it's not much better, it just has more weight becasue its a HUB too... but for the money I'd buy two or three Mouse Bungee's in different colours and be a hipster nerd boss lol
