Do any of you regularly use and e-reader and did you root it?

Yes (Kindle Paperwhite) and no. However, lately I've been doing a lot more reading on my phone for one reason or the other.

Love the Paperwhite. No rooting. They convert pdfs for free by e-mail.

Yes (2x) and yes (2x).
If I have a choice, I always go for the more hackable hardware. I'm not hacker, but others are and kindly provide the interwebs with their wonderful exploits. My first ebook reader was a Hanlin V3 I bought and rooted some 8 years ago and. I dropped it this year and bought and rooted a Nook with glowlight. I'm in the process of making it see my usb keyboard. If I can manage it, I'll be writing outside in my garden.
Not to mention it reads anything I throw at it. From pdfs to saved pocket articles, epubs and mobis, DRM or non-DRMed files. But any reader now can read anything, if you use Calibre.

I'm the same. I became somewhat obsessed with hacking my hardware after spending a couple of weeks hacking together a custom firmware for my WDTV to add Wifi. It's amazing what some products will do with a bit of time invested.

I have bricked a couple of devices over the years though, that one always hurts.

I played around with some custom firmwares on the wdtv v1. Nerve did the Ethernet or WiFi mod though.

As has ben said with Calibre any ebook can be read on any device. That said, the organization of books can be a PITA. I bought my wife a Kindle Touch a year or so ago and put all the books I could find of my wife's favorite author on it. It is impossible for her to find books in different series. The software on the Touch just dumps the books on it and you have to search to find each book. She is not very technologically proficient and a better organized file system would make her, and thus me, happier. Any help, thoughts, and ideas are appreciated.

I'm also looking for a new ereader so I through up this thread to see what responses I would receive. Surely more of you hack your android devices and any other product you can. This is GeekHACK -  right!?
