The main tool I used was a fresh razor blade since I wasn't sculpting it while it was still soft. Due to the flat angles and sides, that was the only thing I needed.

Soo to answer your question there are a number of good tools to sculpt with. I'm partial to the aluminum handled tools that kind of resemble dentist picks. I'm not sure of the best place to find these since I had a number of them in my tool collection already. If you're crafty enough you can use almost anything to sculpt with though such as tooth picks or bent pieces of wire.
Alright thanks, my design is also flat-faced (inspired by bro-bots) so I think ill try your technique. If you ever make one of these in blue, tell me and I will jump on that so hard! Good job so far man, keep it up :D

If it were matched to a higher profile top row, I'd be all over these.

I'm going to start on this relatively soon. It might be a while, considering how long it took me to make the original.

Question on key cap profile though.. The tallest key cap I have at my disposal is a number row from a poker II. I'm not familiar with anything but DSA profile so I'm not sure if the poker number key is the same shape as a F-row key from another Cherry mx board. I also see that it is angled more in the front than the back.

Can anyone confirm if this would be a good choice to start with?

Best IMO for casting is thick dyesub PBT. Its all 1 piece so you won't get any slight quality differences that doubleshot would get. Plus its cherry profile and thick

Might have to take this offer if my poker key is the wrong shape. Are the double shot poker keys not standard cherry profile?

^this was sort of what I was referring to when I mentioned the bent wire.

poker is oem

honestly if you mold stuff on top of a cap it doesn't matter what profile it is, its going to feel different from all the other keys

Ive been wanting to try my hand at this. I have 3 questions

1.) what did you make your molds in? Like was it a cup or??

2.) how did you make separate molds for the top and bottom?

3.) is there that you put on the molds to release the cap after it has dried?

I used an empty acrylic paint tube. The top and bottoms are cut off and there is a cut going down the side. It's the perfect diameter for a key cap to minimize silicone waste.

To make a two part mold you make each half in different stages. I'll take some pics of the process later on. First I lay down a thin layer of clay. (Pictured). I make it a little wider than the diameter of the tube and I also make sure it is perfectly flat. Then gently press the key cap onto it ever so slightly. All your looking to do is make a seal with the clay, not sink the cap into it. Then I electrical tape my tube together and press it into the clay around the cap. Silicone is ready to be poured in at this point to make the first half.

For the second half, remove the cured silicone with master inside as a single unit. Do not separate. Clean off residual clay and brush/spray on your silicone mold release. Place it back in the tube in the reverse direction. Seal the tube and pour the second half of the mold.

I don't bother adding sprues before molding. I drill them in after both halves of the mold are created.

Mold release is not needed for anything but preventing silicone sticking to other silicone.

It's not as complex as I may have made it appear.
