200 Matias ALPS clone switches.  Can choose between clicky and quiet.

Maybe setting the stage for ALPs key caps from MD in the future?!

I'd buy these if I knew I could get gaps, stabs, and a PCB/Case kit to build something with.  But I don't know if I'd ever use them.

I will also note that MK has Matias switches (110 for $37 shipped) so this is not your only chance to get ALPS switches.

Personally, I committed to the drop at the lowest price.  Maybe if they see there's enough demand they will run a drop for ALPS caps, which I think are coming soon

Awesome.

For all those old Alps switch fans: try replacing the click/tactile leaves with new ones from Matias switches. Sometimes they don’t work perfectly, but sometimes the results are really nice. For example, I really like this orange Alps switch I tried putting a clicky Matias leaf into. (Full disclaimer: I haven’t yet done this for a full keyboard yet).

I kept asking myself "Why should I?" for a very long time, thinking about compatible PCBs and so on and so forth, then I ask myself this:

"Why shouldn't I?"

But seriously though, MX vs ALPS?

Are you asking for a comparison?

If there is one.

Both types of Matias switches are smoother and more tactile than any MX switch. The quiet ones are quieter than any MX switch. The clicky ones are louder than any MX switch. [Though sound of keyswitches depends a lot on keycaps, plate, and case.] The actuation point is quite near the top of the keypress: some people like this, some people don’t. Matias switches are stiffer than MX red, blue, or brown. They’re less stiff than MX black, clear, or green, though clear is somewhat close. (I personally wish they would actuate with about 5-10 grams-force less than they currently require: I slightly prefer the weight of blue or orange Alps, Alps plate spring, or SMK “monterey” blue switches. Matias switches feel very similar to good-condition complicated white Alps.)

From what I understand, the Cherry MX blue “jailhouse” mod results in a switch that’s closer to Matias quiet switches than any other type of MX switch, but my guess is that it’s probably still less tactile.

Matias switches have a bit of “wobble” forward/backward, even more than complicated Alps switches do. I don’t personally find this to be an issue, but some people don’t like it.

Much appreciated. I'm already hating on stock MX switches for the slight wobble, and my baby fingers would like to reduce the amount of stress needed to press a switch.

AlaricLJS put lighter springs in his matias switches and I got to try out the KB. I really liked it.

If you dig modding, it's something to try. I believe he used XM greens from a ducky.

200 Matias ALPS clone switches.  Can choose between clicky and quiet.

Maybe setting the stage for ALPs key caps from MD in the future?!

Not clones.

Are they in stock at MK? Because last I checked they only had 30 or 90 in stock.

I kept asking myself "Why should I?" for a very long time, thinking about compatible PCBs and so on and so forth, then I ask myself this:

"Why shouldn't I?"

But seriously though, MX vs ALPS?

Alps are awesome.

Care to explain a bit more? The Matias switch bears some resemblance to dampened cream alps, but were absolutely not manufactured by ALPS and sure as heck doesn't have an ALPS logo on them.

If that's not a clone, then what is it?

Matias switches are entirely their own thing. He even at one point was examining using cherry-compatible stems in order for keycap support, it just ended that that wasn't possible. The main goal was always to recreate the feel of original Alps.

The two years development time and tighter tolerances are not at all insignificant. Elements from other Alps designs did make it in from one form or another, and given the goal this is inevitable to some extent. I'd class them as a clone if molds were simply made of some random simplified alps switch and then put into production - the connotation is to create something of inherently lesser quality.

According to this wiki, "Unlike typical Alps clone switches, Matias switches are externally an exact replica of Alps switches including the four wing-shaped plate retention clips."  I guess it all depends on one's definition of a clone, which is a another debate in itself.

I guess anyone reading this thread just needs to know that they are not manufactured by ALPS, but they are of the same design and are compatible with any parts designed for ALPS switches.

I think “clone” is an okay description, and not pejorative. The internal design is basically the same as simplified Alps switches, with some very slight differences.

They did do a very good job getting everything right, with tight tolerances, so they’re probably nicer than any of the original simplified (SKBM) switches or any of the other “clones”, but it’s more a matter of getting precise design and manufacturing figured out than inventing a new switch.

FYI, will be announcing a new 60% keyboard GB in the next few days.
