TEX TKL Case with Phantom?
« on: Tue, 22 July 2014, 14:22:54 »
Would I be able to use this case with the Phantom PCB and a phantom compatible plate? What else would I need besides the switches, diodes, stabilizers, a cord, and keycaps? Would I need standoffs or anything like that?

Said metal case http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=280.

I've only heard about the 60% case, but it's been mostly good. What do you guys think?

Should work through deduction, considering a lot of peeps have their phantoms in filco tkl cases.

You'll also need a Teensy, which is where you might run into clearance issues.  I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but testing it might be the only way to know for certain.  I think those cases are relatively new.

That's what I'm afraid of. And I knew that too, just forgot for a minute.

I'm not really up for dropping $150 on a case that might not even work.

To build a Phantom you need
- Phantom PCB
- Metal/acrylic plate
- Cherry switches
- Teensy 2.0
- 1N4148 Diodes
- LEDs
- LED stand offs (if your doing Filco style LEDs)
- LED resistors
- A case

I made an imgur album when I built mine that might be helpful - https://imgur.com/a/l5lQi

Filco MJ2 TKL (Cherry Clears)  |  Phantom 87 (78g Gateron Clears)  |  Phantom 86 (67g Zealios)

I made a post about this in another thread somewhere. About using this case with the Phantom. Later, when I'm not on mobile, I'll find it and link to it from here.

Is it this one?

Is tex case phantom compatible? There is three in stock I do not know if I buy or no.

It probably relies on the bends in the plate to support the PCB/plate assembly in the case, just like the Vortex case does.

Also, this TEX case seems not to be as deep on the bottom. The Phantom may not fit, due to the Teensy on the underside of the PCB. But the only way to know for sure would be to test it.

I dunno, that cutout for the cable looks pretty deep, it has to accomodate the height of the internal connector. I think it will work.

I would not buy, however unless I had a measurement of the height of a filco connector to compare with. I can measure my teensy height off the phantom PCB with a caliper for reference if you require it.

I saw somewhere that they solder Teensy without pins to make PCB Low Profile, can that work?

Yes, that was it, thanks DV!

I tried it a couple times without pins, and got mixed results. Sometimes you just need the pins there for mechanical connection, to reinforce the electrical connection, or else things go wrong. Ususally I cut the pins off so low that the Teensy PCB comes very close to touching the keyboard PCB. And even then, I'm worried that the TEX case might not be deep enough. Only actual testing would tell, though.

I did that on mine and it turned out very nice. Its about as low profile as is absolutely possible with the teensy. I applied solder flux to the holes on both the Phantom and Teensy, inserted pins in the four corners as "guides", filled the other holes with solder until it jumped the gap between the two PCBs, then removed the guide pins and filled those holes with solder. It was very tedious but it turned out well and I haven't had any durability issues yet. If you do this, make sure you put a strip of black tape in-between the PCB's.

In fact, it was so low and close to the board I had trouble getting most of the mini-usb connectors I had to plug in without straining the female connector on the Teensy. I had a custom cable made by Pexon without the connector housing so it would fit without stressing anything.

Whether or not that is low enough for the Tex case I don't know ...

Well if I wanted to build a phantom, what case would you guys recommend? I'd only need the case, so I'd prefer not to waste my money on a donor keyboard.

Sprit cases are super sexy, but I am not sure if the orders for TKL cases are still open.

I would, but I don't really want a case the doesn't look like a standard case (if that makes any sense).

I kind of wanted just a normal looking case in black or gun metal, to go with my Dolch.
