Hello, fellow enthusiasts!
« on: Tue, 05 August 2014, 10:35:20 »
Hello hello. I've been on the mechanical keyboards for a couple of years now, but nothing too crazy. Been happy with my Das Keyboard Professional S. But in the last month I have been on crazy kick to grab a TKL and have been researching other keyboards, modding, window-shopping for keycaps, etc. And geekhack has come up a lot in all the googling. So now that I have a new Ducky Shine 3 TKL (thanks in no small part to several posts I found here), I figured I'd join and have fun talking the mkb with y'all.

Have a Poker II on the way as well. In fact I bought a monitor stand in anticipation of needing the extra space and being able to swap between two keyboards.

Also have some fun keycaps on the way.

So it begins…

Cheers!

Welcome! I've got my eye on a Poker II as well.

What made you go with the Ducky TKL?
Current: Ergodox (Ergo-clears) | Kinesis Advantage (Browns) -- Colemak
Future: HHKB Pro 2 | Maltron L90 | µtron | Axios

Well, it just seemed like the consensus was that the Ducky keyboards just have fantastic build quality and are a great choice unless you feel like stepping up into the Filco price range. The Shine 3 has so many LED modes that I don't feel like I need but it is a great feeling keyboard. Clean and solid. Great features I'm loving it. Also the fact that I can make the spacebar LEDs show pretty colors is growing on me.

I wanted a TKL as a style switch. I have been strictly full keyboard (I did a lot of bookkeeping for summer jobs so I probably just had that nostalgia for all that data entry) but I saw the Poker II on Massdrop and then read something about a TKL being a slightly more ergonomic setup because of the reduced distance to mouse and thought, well I'm not doing bookkeeping now, let's go for a smaller keyboard!

I actually bought a Code keyboard with green switches and just didn't like it as much: neither the greens nor the feel of the keyboard really hooked me as much as the Ducky. So the Code keyboard is getting returned.

Like you, I got a Poker II after being a life long full size keyboard user. Prior to the Poker I used the number pad very frequently, the arrow keys even more so. It took some adjusting, but I like the compact form factor quite a bit. I am considering getting a compact layout with arrow keys to see if I like that better. 60% I find to be the best look, but sometimes I really need those arrows! Plus I'd like to try MX Blacks. I have browns, clears and blues, but nothing linear.

What did you get for switches? Was it the Clears?

Oh, and welcome!

I feel the exact same way! I think that's why even though I grabbed the Poker II (with clear switches from the recent Massdrop), I figured the 75% would be good for most of my day job stuff since I use arrow keys all the time.  I guess I'll see how it goes for me with the 60% and the getting-used-to-it process.

I've been strictly a blues kinda girl (that's what my Ducky is), but I'm hoping I'll like the feel of the clears. And maybe the Poker II will be something I can take to public/office-type places. I'm already a super menace at home with my blues.

Welcome queencodemonkey!

Looks like you're off to a wonderful start. Great choice of boards you have already and checking out MX-Clears and the 60% format is an excellent next step.  :thumb:

I have Clears at home, and Blues at work. Really, both are loud as far as my coworkers are concerned, but they got used to it.  ^-^ The Clears are really nice, but not as snappy as Blues. I'm thinking if I go with something linear it might cut back on the noise...maybe.

I'm not sure I can go with a full TKL, maybe something like a Filco MiniLa, or a Noppo Choc Mini where I get the best of both worlds. It'll take me forever to decide!

As a side note, it is always good to see another woman kicking around these parts. :)

Welcome to Geekhack! Nice choice on the Ducky :D. And I'm glad to see mashby is still pushing his 60% layout hard :P

Welcome to Geekhack!

I have many Duckys - red, green and yellow backlighting (although the yellow looks too orange for my liking).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
