[Review] Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate Brown
« on: Wed, 11 June 2014, 03:15:44 »

It has been near 2 years since I bought my first mechanical keyboard (Noppoo Choc Mini 84) and I've tried many mech keyboards. However, I've never feel like writing a review about a keyboard like this time.
Although there're already two threads (if I'm not counting them wrong) about the new Das Keyboard 4, I think it will still useful to have one more here.
Please let me know if you can't see the images. I use sina weibo albums instead of usual imgur albums because imgur is unavailable from my country at the moment.

The Package of the Keyboard is pretty simple and elegent. The one I bought is with brown switch so it is colored brown and white with a large image of the keyboard on front side. I guess it will be blue and white theme if carrying blue switch.
Unlike the old Das series, new Das Keyboard 4 doesn't provide red switch version at the moment. Only brown and blue.

On the back side there is some information about the keyboard that I think is kind of useless for GH keyboard users.  :D

The accessories contain a ruler, a thin paper that tells you how to switch between 6KRO and NKRO and... that's all? Yea that's all.
Seriously, I'm super disappointed when I purchased a 170 dollar "Badass" mechanical keyboard and didn't even get a keycap-puller with it.

The build quality of the keyboard, however, it pretty good. It is definately among the most solid keyboards of my collection.  :thumb: With the anodic aluminum top panel, just looking at the keyboard is already a great pleasure. For the ultimate version, the media keys and Das logo on the top right are all with black legend, which is kind of similar with RF87UB.  :))

Before getting the keyboard, I was worried about the feel of the media keys. Although they are all rubber dome, the pressing feeling of the media keys are very comfortable. And the sound volume wheel feels even better.

The keycaps' hight is another thing I don't like about this keyboard. OEM profile just feels way too high for this new design. I think I'm going to find a set of IMSTO Cherry profile keycaps for replacement later.

Last thing I think worth mentioning is, Das Keyboard 4 uses cherry-stabilizer on spacebar and costar-stabilizer on other long keys. This is very new design that I've never seen before. (correct me if I'm wrong :'() I know both stabilizers have their pros and cons but this is a very clever design in my opinion because most of the "not firm feeling" complains about costar stabilizer are from the spacebars.

Conclusion:
+Very solid feel and nice typing experience
+Anodic aluminum top panel which is a lot better than the glossy one as before IMO
+Media Keys and USB 2.0 Hubs

-A bit expensive
-The build quality of the ruler is bad
-Almost no accessories
-OEM profile

Thanks for this review, real choice bud  :thumb: .

I wanted to ask you about the "Media Buttons" do you need to install any piece of software for them to work or are they hard coded into the firmware of this keyboard?

Actually this keyboard is real quality compared to the previous generation with it's gawd awful shiny black fascia, looks like they finally listened to their customers to get rid of it.

Thx man. I'm glad that the photo album works all well!

For your question about the media keys, the answer is no. This keyboard doesn't require any kind of software program to be installed. I think you're right: they're just coded into the firmware.  :p

Btw, please count me in as a member of shinny coat haters club hahah ;D

I like DAS original, a friend picked one up when they first were launched with Mx Blue. Found a used one for like $80 and Im going to sand it down with some real fine paper and use it as backup for my work keyboard :)

Nice review, if I would have to pay full price Id go for something other then a new gen Das

Im glad someone did a review of this. Thanks!

I like how it went with Cherry stabs on the space and costar on the rest. I really really hate costar stabs, especially on spacebars (don't get me started on ABS) and I like how it's mixed.

What material are the caps? I too would probably just buy replacements, but I would go for another ISO board and **** trying to buy full sets with ISO options.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Thanks for a good review!

Oh, by "ruler" I thought you meant "wrist rest". I had to look twice to see that it is actually a ruler ...

It's a ruler that doubles as the feet at the top of the board. A bit weird I think, but it's an interesting design concept. Not that practical really.

Oh, and not practical if you don't have a perfectly flat surface to put your board on.

How does the Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate Brown compare to some of there older models? What are the main improvements from say the DAS Model S Professional? Do the improvements solely pertain to the hub in the upper right?

The most useful upgrade is the usb hub, but the most significant upgrade is the looking lol. I mean the anodized alu top case.

It's produced in China mainland, so may not be as solid as the very old Das keyboards that were produced in TW.
