3D Printed MX Switch Opener
« on: Tue, 16 September 2014, 10:31:17 »
Recently I've gotten access to a 3D printer, and I remembered seeing a 3D printed MX switch opener. If anyone has any files for it, or know more, please post here.

I'd be super interested in something like this too. For those interested, this is what it is: video. I haven't been able to find out any other details.

Something like this would save me so much time while changing springs; my binder clip thing takes over a minute to open one switch. Sad that there isn't much about it.

If you have a 3D printer, do you also have a CAD package? Why not just get a switch, some calipers, and take your own measurements? Then print your own.

As I said, I have ACCESS to a 3D printer, otherwise I'm just a big noob at CAD. What exactly would the mechanism be to open the switch?

Tomayto, tomahto.

If you look at the video in the second post, you can see the tool in action. On one of the axis' walls of the cube, there are two arms that hold the switch with a press fit. On the other axis' walls, there are little fingers. When you sit the switch in, the fingers push on the MX switch housing's fingers. So when you sit the switch into the cube, the two arms hold the switch bottom in place while the cube fingers open the switch top.

What's that supposed to mean? One is a tool and the other one is a skill. I have a laser printer but I sure as hell can't write a good novel. I personally wouldn't be able to write a CAD spec that has the proper tolerances for an MX switch opener either.

Would you mind putting together a CAD document that has the specs for an opener like the one in the video?

If I end up making it, I'll post it on the forums. This'll give me a good project to work on :D

It means he said he has access to the printer and I implied that he owns the printer.

Perhaps when I get a chance I'll make a CAD model.

If you do make a CAD file, can you please PM it to me, I'm currently really busy, and I probably won't get started until a few weeks. If you can that would be amazing.

From a design perspective, I much prefer the 'open from the bottom' compareds with 'open from the top' styles.

I can't PM it to you because I can't attach files to PMs but there are other ways of sending the files ;). I'm currently busy as well so I doubt I'd get started any time soon.

Edit: I made a crappy version on Google Sketchup. Will eventually print it and try it out :D
