Lubing Keyboards
« on: Wed, 17 December 2014, 19:41:46 »
I'm sorta new here, as you can probably already tell.

I'm in the market for a mid-range keyboard, I was looking Filco TKL's or maybe an Ergodox.
My question to you all is a fairly simple one, every time I see custom lubed, custom springed keyboards,
they always seem to be on custom Korean boards like GON keyboards, do you need a custom keyboard to do things like Lubing the keyboard?

Thanks so much guys

No you don't need a custom but with most keyboards you will need to disassemble (desolder/ remove switches) to lube and sticker. If you can't do this yourself there are people on GH who will do it for you.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

+1 on everything people already said.

It's also a sort of "might aswell" thing to do since you'll have disassembled switches ready to lube and stuff infront of you.

If you get into lubing... I first started with those expensive Krytox blends but recently have been modding boards using cheap silicone grease.  No issues so far and honestly i might like it more than Krytox blends.  2 bucks for a tube that will last 3-4 boards.

with the switch tolerances and the nature of krytox you can apply it very thinly. I just used the metal end of the syringe applicator I have and it was sufficient.

also turns out it was a lot easier than I thought.

Echoing the sentiments of everyone else. Be prepared together involved with a hobby project that will take quite some time though. Ten to twenty hours to lube and finish a board when you account for watching YouTube videos to teach yourself how and any other misc research!

I don't know what you guys are doing to your keyboards that requires you to lube them up and I'm not sure I want to know.

Hmm.. could you give me the name of that lube of yours? ^.^ I've been thunking of lubing my poker, but the price and long wait time kinda put me off. Sorry for hijacking the thread!

To OP: If you ever CONSIDER lubing your kb, then do it. I regret not lubing mine :))
