ergodox slim case
« on: Wed, 29 October 2014, 20:14:07 »
i'm seeing some DIY keyboards that have a slim metal plate-case. it is a plate with bends on top and bottom to hold the board slight raised from the desk.

i'm thinking about designing one for ergodox. anyone would be interested?

 something like this:

Interestingly, that case design was first come up with by dox, the maker of the ergodox, for his first project, the doxkb. It's probably my favourite case design. I might be down, depending on pricing.

wow, i have too many open tabs. i though i was on that forum :/

well, so let's make this a historic research thread!

please tell me more about your first dox!

i did some searching before posting and only found sandwich style cases for the dox.

ah, by dox himself... you mean the hacked up folded metal sheet prototype, yes i've seen it... but i was thinking more like a permanent one :)

I’m very much hoping that we can get future massdrop ergo-layout keyboards with this style. I also believe it’s as cheap or cheaper (at a scale of a 100–500 units) than doing a bunch of layers of laser-cut acrylic, believe it or not.

I’m thinking a shape something along the lines of:

Where the two straight lines are the bent-over legs.

I think that's awesome and I can't wait.

Nah, needs SS (with a few DSA/SA on the thumb / vertical keys) or carefully selected DCS/Cherry profile caps. MX switches could possibly get dyesub DCS or doubleshot sphericals, but I think Alps will be stuck with DCS / OEM / something similar, and probably either doubleshot or blank (or lasered maybe).

i like it. to be honest i'm trying to make a rats nest version with puty to make a mix of an ergodox and a ms natural... i think the natural has much much better finger conform for the char keys and ample room for thumb modifiers.

are those layout variations being discussed somewhere? i used to go to key64 but that site is strange to navigate now
